Me again. Sorry!

My dad has been really bad the last 10 days. He is on antibiotics through a central line. He is at home. Nurses come everyday. He is on 6 litres of oxygen 24/7.

He has been on these antibiotics for 10 days with no real improvement. He can’t breathe very well unless he is lying down. I have noticed his nose is quite purple.

They told him that he is end stage COPD. But I was wondering if this is it? Is this the best it gets? Can he get better? He hasn’t got out of bed as when he does he is so breathless. He did have a couple of falls a few days ago.

He has had many flare ups in the last 12 months.

But he has refused to be admitted this time which is why the nurses are coming.

Can anyone tell me if this can get better? Is this it?

He is very down and depressed.

Extremely worried. But that’s been the last 18 moths!

Hi Sallyhoad, I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. I have no idea whether this is the end for him but it doesn’t sound good. I just hope he’s getting all the care he needs and feels comfortable. Have you been told he could get better?

Try and get information from the doctor and nurses who attend to your dad as they should know more.

I don’t think they know to be fair. I would have hoped he would have started to feel better after having these antibiotics for 10 days through IV.

He also has heart failure.

Hi Sally

I was just wondering if your dads been given any steroids (predislone) as well as antibiotics as often these are given together for infections when breathing becomes more difficult.

Is he managing to take any nourishment. When my husband was very ill he drank chicken broth which gave him a bit of energy.

So sorry to hear about your dad. It must be very difficult for you seeing him so unwell.
