My Eurovision song barred by the BBC

Encouraged by skischool , here is the song I created for the BBC's Eurovision song contest submissions last year, only to find the Beeb changed the rules in October and made it the responsibility of a big music agency. So I released it as a single this week anyway. Feel free to share the links if you enjoy it.

Oh my, I'm presuming that you are the lady on the left? Both of you must have done a lot of practising to get your harmonies right. Well done! In fact, very well done both of you! Seriously I do think your song&singing would score higher than the UK will on Eurovision night.... but we will never know unless you put in for it next year!!!!!😁🐿💕

Yes, I'm on the left. Sadly I can't resubmit it for next year. There are strict rules about all Eurovision song entries not being performed in public or promoted before October , 8 months before the finals.

Shall have to put my thinking cap on and write another one.

Shame, those sexy hand and hip movements clinched for me. 😀x

I think its quite admirable wantimg to write & sing your own song and to use Eurovision Competition as your "platform"!!

All power to you and may this be the beginnings of a music career. ( Don't tell Mr.D coz he'll get too excited and Midge will tell him off!).🐿💕

What a lovely, easy listening song and sang so beautifully, much better than some of the rubbish we’ll hear on the night. Are you really sisters ? and do you sing professionally together ? X

We are sisters in Christ. Rachael is a member of my church band. We've sung harmonies together for years, but usually hymns and worship songs.

Just what we need... a really good song. I really liked it and its such a shame it couldn't be entered in the competition.

Ergendl,i think it wasn't accepted because you sneaked in Sydney somewhere in the middle and the Eurocrats would have pounced on that so 'Nil points' from them but a 10 from me.

Well done the pair of you.

Two years ago? How did I miss this gem? Bravo, Maestro! Playing along with you. Intro-Chorus Eb/F/G/C Verse C/F/C/G Bridge Bb/C/D/G/C/C/G “2nd Chorus” Eb/F. Correct me if I’m wrong please. Harmonies +1! Love the arrangement! Vocals … outstanding and with COPD? Fabulous! Beep Beep mmm Beep Beep Yeah!

Correct, Sharp5Flat13! I wrote the song in three interchangeable parts and then assembled them in the order that worked best for us as singers. In the original order, we just couldn't find the next note between two of the sections, so this was Mark II. My fellow singer is an ace with harmonies. We've been singing and playing together in our church band for years, and she just knows where to put the harmonies in my songs without me having to notate them - although I often do, and then she has to correct them...Thanks for refreshing the memory of a fun time before the nasty C word.

I love it, Ergendl. May I please have your permission to share it on other social groups? The fact that it is all major chords is amazing! Never a touch of sadness/darkness. Give me a little time and I will sort out the key changes! And the call response element worked perfectly!

Here’s a magical Beatle harmony for you. In “I Want to Hold Your Hand” the line “I can’t hide” is repeated 3 times and it sounds like only the last note changes up in pitch and harmony. But the first line is John CCD and Paul a Major 3rd above EEF#. The second one John goes chromatic CC#D and again, Paul follows with a Major 3rd, EFF#. The last line John repeats the chromatic but Paul starts on F# then G then ends on A.

With the help of George Martin, all sorts of tiny changes like that, contributed to the ability to never tire listening to the same song again and again. I always said that Beatle music was a great guide to teach music from…and my heart was warmed when I heard Julian Lennon say something similar.

The day I met Julian Lennon.

Yes, of course you can share it elsewhere. All the copyright has been recorded. It's even on an album on somewhere on Spotify that no-one can find. Try visiting my website eregendal.com/music to hear samples of that and some of my other efforts. As for the composition of the song: I tend not to think too much about the chords that go into the structure. I usually compose from a mood, and the chord progressions evolve out of that. It does mean I risk creating pastiches. One thing I often have to do is to drop a new song one or two tones from the original key, as I tend to start out in the old ukelele and guitar favourites G and D, and my voice has dropped to a C or Bflat.
