I have been prescribed prophylactic Azithromycin but can’t tolerate the tablets, does anyone nebulise this antibiotic?

Speak to your gp about another antibiotic. Or wether the antibiotics you have got can be nebulised

Hi Dibola, how long have you been taking Azith and what problems are you experiencing? Azith can be a life saver. I have been taking Azith for 7 years now. At the beginning I did experience problems with my stomach and bowels but slight changes in my diet and giving my body time to get used to Azith worked for me. I hope this helps. Take care of yourself. Maximonkey

Thanks Maximonkey, I have tried so hard to take it but even after a couple of months couldn’t keep any food down. But you’re quite right it’s beneficial & I have been very unwell since stopping so seeking an alternative; thought it made sense to nebulise it instead. Everything to do with managing lung disease is an battle! 🙂

Hi Dibola, yes you are so right, everything is a battle. I suffered from symptoms of IBS, stomach pains/wind and loose stools. It was really awful, but I realised if I cut down on veg and I ate yoghurt instead of other puddings maybe it would calm down. After around 6 weeks of watching what I ate my body got used to the Azith and I have been fine since. I now eat normally. I hope this helps but if not go and see your GP there are other antibiotics similar to Azith which work in the same way. Keep asking for help if you need it. Take care, Maximonkey

Hi Dibola04, I've been taking Azithromacin 3 times a week since October and did have problems initially (Piles), but my body seems to have settled down now, but do have occasional mild flare-ups, especially about a day after drinking alcohol sometimes, but it has been worth it because of the difference I feel they have made to other slight ailments I had. My tinnitus appears to have almost abated, and ironically, my digestion system seems better, too! I cannot advise about nebulising it, though. Good luck with it all!

Thank you for your reply, it certainly seems powerful in reducing infections and I am glad it’s helping you, I will persevere!

Hi Dibola,

I was prescribed these tablets but I did not feel at all well whilst taking them. This could be because I am not a tablet taker and would rather go for a walk with a headache than take an aspirin.

However, I have a sister-in-law who takes them regularly (by mouth) and has no trouble at all.

Best wishes. Lilianne.

Really sorry to hear about your plight, and I'm afraid I can't assist you as I am able to tolerate Azithromycin. I think if your GP can't help then contact your hospital and speak to an appropriate consultant about your situation. Surely there must be some alternative to Azithromycin for those who cannot tolerate this medication.

Good luck

Sorry Dibola04, I only take them orally, 3 times a week, so cannot comment on nebulizing them. I found them very helpful as I feel a lot better as I think they have helped me with other ailments such as easing my digestive system and reducing the sound in my ear caused by tinnitus.
