Refusal Of Perscription On Hand

I asked for Antibiotics and Steroids ready for my next chest infection as I get them invariably after each cold or flu but was denied access under the reason that they could not monitor toxisity in the body as people did not contact them to say they had took the medication. Is this now endemic to all surgeries. How can we convince them we need this medication on hand?

Hi Hun, I managed to get my Repeat for Rescue Meds by The GP phoning me and I, having to explain, my Consultant had written to her about Rescue Meds & No Way was I to be left without.(Toxisity in the Body? never heard that one before,) My Pharmacy are marvellous but cannot release without the prescription. It's a Matter of the GP looking at all your Notes on Their patient List which is only a click away on the Computer. I am Red Flagged (she didn't understand this). I realise that GP's are over Stretched and sometimes have a Fog before them. No Excuse. I got mine the same Day, Hubby had to dash off to get them, Good job he can, whereas I can't. Good Luck. XXX

Seems odd when it will be on file that you have to keep them to hand. My surgery always put my prescriptions through never had a problem might be worth speaking to you doctor.

Welcome to the forum web_dev. I'm sorry to hear you are having such a problem. I suggest you call the BLF Helpline (03000 030 555 office hours) for advice. I'm sure they will be able to advise you on how to persuade your health team to prescribe the rescue meds you need.

You shouldn’t need to persuade your surgery you need a rescue pack as it’s recommended in the NICE guidelines for the management of COPD.

If you also have a consultant supporting this it’s difficult to see how you can be denied it.

Yes I have had this!!! I rang to say I cracked open my rescue pack as I had chest infection. The prescription person at surgery said “ oh you have to come in and order it” what??? Never needed to do this before. And I then saw copd nurse and she just printed it out! But now I used it and am without again I’m going to mention the NICE guidelines when I call them.

I have them on my repeat prescription marked as "Rescue Pack". If I use them I just tick the boxes and replacements are issued. I would have thought that all surgeries can do the same.

I did have this problem with steroids.

Apparently my doctor is not keen on their use BUT the consultant sent them a letter stipulating what emergency meds must be given and re-stocked when required.

The aim of all this is to self treat quickly and hopefully avoid hospital admittance.

I am on support ABs for the foreseeable future, and this has definitely helped no end, AGAIN, monitored and ordered by consultant.

I have my rescue steroids and antibiotics on my repeat prescription and if I do need to start taking them, I reorder on the first day of taking them so that I am never without. I am amazed that all surgeries do not use this system. It certainly gives me peace of mind that my rescue pack is always at hand.

My surgery is great. I phone them the day I start my emergency meds and they automatically give me another script so I always have meds at home.
