Two billion people worldwide are infected with Mtb, with 10 million new cases of active tuberculosis (TB) and 1.7 million deaths each year. Prevention of pulmonary infection or disease in adolescents and adults would have the largest effect on the epidemic by controlling Mtb transmission3. The only licensed TB vaccine, BCG (live, attenuated Mycobacterium bovis), is administered intradermally at birth and provides protection against disseminated TB in infants but has variable efficacy against pulmonary disease in adolescents and adults.

Good article 2greys. As a 20 year old I contracted TB and was treated with tablets and with streptomycin injections. A long and tedious process with months of being confined to bed rest. This innovation seems to herald a much more effective treatment. The whole experience left me with scarred lungs leading eventually to infection with pseudomonas eruginosa and a diagnosis of bronchiectasis. The treatment was a necessary and sufficient condition in the 1960 of lung medicine. I am grateful that it was around for me and the brilliant nursing in an isolation ward.
