Bronchiectasis

Does anyone out there get recurring chest infections.

I had one a few weeks ago that took 3 weeks to clear up, 5 weeks later I've now got another.

It's getting me down, I live alone , so dont see anyone.

I've thought about going into social housing.

Maybe at least I would have some company.

Janlyn1953 - do you have a respiratory consultant who specialises in bronchiectasis? If not, consider asking your GP to refer you. Do you have a good lung clearance regime? This is really important. BTS Bronchiectasis Guidelines state that the doctor should consider long term antibiotics when the patient is experiencing three or more infections per year. Also, consideration should be given to immunity tests.

Moving to sheltered accommodation could be useful but if you can work on improving your health, you will be in a better place to tackle such a move. At the moment it doesn’t sound as if you are equal to it.

Hi .

Yes I have a chest specialist.

I have allergic asthma, having lots of allergies and unfortunately I'm allergic to mould which affects my Bronchiectasis.

When I'm okay, I'm fine I dont suffer with coughs or have to get mucus up.

I do a lot of walking with my dog.

Its since I moved into this bungalow I have been having a lot more of these chest infections, and I find a shower makes me breathless all the humidity.

It may be an idea to invest in a small dehumidifier Janlyn.

Humidity and damp such a perfect breeding ground for mould spores. I have a Hysure, was around £30 via Amazon.

I have some allergy, I do all j can to keep my immune system tip top.

I too think you should ask your gp fir the prophylactic antibiotics. Really helped me stay infection free last year.

Good luck. P

Does your consultant have a special interest in bronchiectasis? Because you also have asthma, your situation is more complex than if you only had bronchiectasis. Consultants who specialise in your conditions are usually found in university teaching hospitals. You need to keep on top of these infections because they can cause further lung damage. Do you take Azithromycin? Do you send sputum samples in to the laboratory? Have you been tested for aspergillosis and pseudomonas? When you are given antibiotics is the course two weeks? Many doctors don’t appreciate that the protocol for bronchiectasis is two weeks antibiotics.

I can’t see why your bungalow should precipitate infections - could be coincidence. Regarding the shower, put the head into a plastic bag containing white vinegar, seal and soak overnight. You could also consider installing a good quality extractor fan or opening a window.

Ask your GP to refer you to go on it. It can make a real difference.
