Wishing a peaceful Christmas and a good New year to you all.

Before discovering this site I felt lost and alone. The advice, support, kindness and genuine caring has been heart warming.

I hope 2020 is kind to you all.

Being from Edinburgh I used to celebrate Hogmanay, New year has always been a sentimental time. So as my Grannie would say ‘Lang may yer lum reek ‘

Basically may you live long and healthy, my Star Trek loving late husband used to joke it was the Scottish version of Spock’s “live long and prosper”.

So here’s to a good one. Best wishes. x

Hi astragal

I’m originally from the northeast and new year was always a traditional affair with someone first footing . It was supposed to be a dark good looking gentleman who was the first to step over your threshold after the clock chimed 12. If our family didn’t have a particularly good year I remember my grandma blaming the person who was the first foot as not being suitable.

Grandmas eh?

So glad you found the site and have found it helpful.

Take care and have a good Christmas

Love

My late father was always roped in to be the first footer, carrying a bit of coal. He was tall and dark.....

In West Wales no woman was allowed out before noon on New Years Day....my grandmother had to feed the hens, and fetch the coal in as she was a widow. A neighbour saw and told her off and got a sharp answer back.
