E-cigarette use significantly increases a person's risk of developing chronic lung diseases like asthma, bronchitis, emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, according to new UC San Francisco research, the first longitudinal study linking e-cigarettes to respiratory illness in a sample representative of the entire U.S. adult population.

I had given up smoking 5 years earlier by vaping and 2 years into vaping bam so ill and diagnosed with emphysema and I’m sure it was the vaping that greatly contributed to that.

Compared to what though? Not smoking at all, well yes, Duh!

Compared to smoking, No.

All of those deaths in America are from drug usage, CBS.

Now if you want to buy from a backstreet vendor who mixes gawd knows what into the juice, then yeah there;s a reasonable chance of getting bad juice.

That does Not mean that vaping is bad.

"Use your own logic instead of behaving like sheep and allowing others to do your thinking for you", does that include your own comments. Spoken like a true nicotine addict. Logic tells you that the lungs have evolved for one purpose, to breathe air for gas exchange, not to absorb nicotine. By your statement you are saying that the 32,000 subjects were vaping cannabis. I suggest you read the report properly.

"The study also found that people who used e-cigarettes and also smoked tobacco—by far the most common pattern among adult e-cigarette users"

Not the case in the UK, The Vast majority do not smoke tobacco at all, so their 'facts' are totallt wrong.

I would also suggest that who Paid for this 'study' to be looked into, as it is Often the case that it is the tobacco industry that produces these results.

I have been vaping for 8 years now and am on several vaping forums that are world wide - not One case of worsening lung functions have occured on them.

I didn’t find I’ll effects of cigarette smoking after 8 years either. The problem is we don’t know the full ramifications of e-cigs as they simply have not been used long term yet.

Nicotine from e cigs is not absorbed through the lungs, but through the inside of the cheeks

2greys profile image
2greys in reply to Gary56

Whilst nicotine can be absorbed on any part of the body, it is a relatively slow process, the lungs however is a much faster process with thousands of times more blood vessel area than through skin. Nicotine is definitely absorbed into the blood stream via the lungs and in much greater quantities.

Ref: The inner surface area of the human lungs measures between 80 and 100 square meters.

It isn’t nicotine that causes the damage though, that’s the misnomer. In normal cigarettes you are correct.

Also very little is known about the long term use of e cigarettes, mainly because they haven't been around for long. But looking at the effects manifesting themselves already, the health risks are fairly huge. And with traditional cigarettes the ill effects took a long time to become apparent, whereas with e cigarettes people are already getting sick or dying.

India has banned e cigarettes. It's the second biggest country of smokers. Not that traditional cigarettes are great! But in a country that consumes a lot of tobacco, they feel that e cigarettes are not a good thing.

(Incidentally, sheep are very intelligent)

Thailand has also banned e-cigs, but guess what? The High Society folks there own the traditional cigarette manufacture and distribution system... Ain't life grand?

I have always thought vaping ludicrous totally ludicrous!! We should dodge inhaling ANYTHING other than air if at all possible. Nebs and inhalers excluded of course!

majji profile image

This has been known for some time now or certainly suspected - tis really just common sense but there is so little of that about now - it is all about making money - cigarettes were known to be harmful in the 1950's however American tobacco companies just buried that info . . . .

All I am going to say is that the American E cigs and Vapes are as regulated as our are. There are no controls over what is added to the liquids or refills, Whereas here in the UK every liquid and refill have to be tested at qualified Labs before being allowed to be put on sale, also any change must go through the process again. I have Emphysema and needed to stop smoking after 50 odd years and thought vaping would help me but I had read and heard all the horror stories so I researched which included talk to a very knowledgeable owner of a vape shop who was working with my local NHS Stop Smoking team. together they came up with a scheme of free vape and everything included for 4 weeks and within 2 weeks I was smoke free but this was only after a very long in depth talk with Steve which included proof of what he said via paper and internet.

The study is more about those who vape and still smoke regular cigarettes primarily

2greys profile image
2greys in reply to Gary56

You need to read the research paper itself, the results are from vaping OR smoking AND dual use. Dual use increases the chances of developing a lung disease to one in three dual users.

Spot on 2greys - was very recently reading about some poor girl in the states whose lungs have come a cropper with her vaping in a very short space of time - I was there in 1959 and 1964 and the danger involved in smoking was being hushed up then by the big tobacco companies of course . . . .

Conclusions of the report “CONCLUSIONS

Current use of e-cigarettes appears to be an independent risk factor for respiratory disease in addition to all combustible tobacco smoking. Although switching from combustible tobacco, including cigarettes, to e-cigarettes theoretically could reduce the risk of developing respiratory disease, current evidence indicates a high prevalence of dual use, which is associated with increased risk beyond combustible tobacco use. In addition, for most smokers, using an e-cigarette is associated with lower odds of successfully quitting smoking.4,36 E-cigarettes should not be recommended.“

I thank the Lord myself my wife and my three Adult heirs to my millions.(I wish) do not smoke vape or involved in drugs.

But I know of people who are dead who died young from lung cancer.

Actually standing outside a pub smoking is to a certain degrading.

What I notice is the amount of young girls smoking,it’s the smell I hate, who wants to kiss an ashtray.

IF I get one person to stop smoking or vaping with my Eulogy today, it has been worth it

Have a lovely Christmas to all.

Chemicals in vape is a huge molecule that doesn't pass into the bloodstream but lays in the lungs....kinda like tar, but maybe worse, no-one knows for sure. Right now it seems much worse than smoking in respect to how quickly one can become deathly sick. At least smoking you could get away with it for 20 or so years before it killed you.

2greys profile image

How right you are. People just do not realise that the addiction to nicotine actually modifies their thought processes. This is why the very graphic pictures on a pack have little effect on them but to a none smoker they are sickeningly gory. A smoker or nicotine vaper will always find an excuse not to quit. Even charging £10 a pack does not deter them, they find the money by hook or by crook. I know of people actually going without food so they can buy a pack and have seen people picking up other's butt ends to re-roll the tobacco to smoke.

Much of the reason for the new "Anti-vaping" crusade is because of young people who would not have dreamed of having a traditional cigarette that are now taking up e-cigs particularly flavoured ones, for that I agree with the campaign,. The real culprits here are the big tobacco companies, quite frankly it's obscene that these people aren't in jail. I currently use e-cigs to get off real cigs but am eyeing further alternates like Nicorette, wish me luck, please and lay off the holier than thou nonsense.

majji profile image
majji in reply to pecede

The real culprits have been known since the early 1950s and as we have stated are the big tobacco companies - who of course are now and have been for years pedalling their wares to most third world countries - I have to say that if anyone wishes to comfort themselves or others with some holier than thou thoughts that is up to them - I do not think we have the right to call other peoples beliefs nonsense. I do wish you luck Pecede and and if you live in the UK you should be able to access smoking cessation clinics on the NHS at most hospitals. I wish anyone who is struggling to quit, the emotional strength to successfully do so.

majii. Thanks for your eloquence. I learned to smoke in Switzerland whilst on holiday from the UK (13 years old). emigrated to the US where I could buy a carton of 200 for a dollar, after the Vietnam war I moved to Canada where cigs were still cheap... never ever thought of the health consequences, holy smokes to use a phrase, until now.

I have had the fortune to visit and work in many "third world" countries as you call them and it's always the same, taxes, government, corruption.... peoples lives? who cares.

majji profile image

Sadly very few people genuinely care to the extent that they are prepared to to take the time and trouble to make a difference to other people's lives themselves - however when one does come across those who do care - value them for they are rare - you have certainly moved around Pecede and I am sure that you will be successful in giving up - keep us posted as to how you are managing - I understand that Nicorettes can be very useful - if somewhat expensive if you have to use them for years - I will just add that when I lived in the States I experienced a terrible pain in the chest when trying to remove my boots and just stopped - not from removing the boots but the smoking I mean ;-) Oh and thank you pecede

I find this sort of evangelism by ex smokers rather amusing, are we now all to go out and spread the word against the evils of vaping,a noble act to save our fellow men from the follies of our own smoking days.In reality it probably will be proven that vaping is indeed as bad as or maybe even worse than smoking but i am not convinced that banging our drum will stop anybody from doing so,perhaps this sort of behaviour also exists on alcoholics anonymous, given the quantities i consume maybe i should join and see,and as for sugar consumption...now that could be interesting.

Thanks for your comments, it's fortunate I have a power wheelchair to get me to to the bathroom, you made me laugh... I gather you enjoy the odd tipple as I do. My Doctor bless his heart says I should cut back with the booze, I say it's all to do with my quality of life, he says it's my quality of life five years from now that concerns him :-) I say , hello, I won't be here in five years. BTW I don't go overboard either.

Skischool makes everyone laugh I am very happy to announce - and your doctor does have a point pecede as your quality of life may be somewhat worse than you expect in a few years - I feel I have the the right to express this sentiment to you as I have secondary metatastic breast cancer which has spread to the lung and also possibly to the brain however where there is life there is hope and I really hope you find yours and quit the smoking too - good luck and pleased to hear you don't go overboard, take care.

Thanks Majii, Sorry to hear of your problems, I know they are a constant aggravation and you just wish... but that ain't gonna happen, let's love and enjoy what we have. As an example of enjoying life, let me introduce exhibit one... My Sister bless her heart sent me a Genuine Lidl Christmas pudding, aged for two years apparently voted the worlds best, I'm in Toronto Canada but the blue devils will shine on Christmas day, maybe you'll see them.

I quit cigarettes six months ago as of December 23 but still vape, that's my next hurdle

majji profile image

Thank you pecede and I really hope you enjoy exhibit One and Two - your lovely sister and her Lidl Christmas Pudding - Lidl has made great inroads to our food shopping centres as has Aldi however I cannot claim to be a fan as there are other retailers I prefer. I had to look up Blue Devils and I hope they shine incredibly brightly for you on the 25th - this morning there is a great deal of news on tv about the perils of vaping and the effects it now has on our lungs along with the deterioration of our air quality - so please take it seriously and good luck with giving up.

Ahh the lovely SirSki - yes I am sure you are right about the perils of vaping and the desire of young people to experience so many different flavors - again it is all down to the desire to make money from supplying things that won't do us any good and will more than likely be harmful - lol it sounds like Brexit all over again - SirSki do not ever change my dear you are wonderful as you are ;-)
