I love it! I have preferred these type of trees to the usual kind for a long time now. The pale one colour fairy lights and the twigs complement each other. Chrys

Thanks Sassy59 :) xx

Now that represents the sort of Christmas I would like to have. Christmas simplicity. 🙂 I've had so many big family ones, uproarious office party ones, all sorts of colourful exciting ones. Now that Midge and I are on our own we prefer to just watch others enjoying themselves from a distance, then enjoy peace and quietness. 😉

I appreciate what you’re saying Don.

I like the big boisterous parties, but am glad to get home and have the quiet simplistic bit.

Saying that. I do miss my old self, loud, life and soul etc, just sit quietly now if. I do go out.

Hope you’re both ok

That is so simple and pretty - and given that we are all now worrying about the state of our planet I am finding it difficult to comprehend just why people are decorating their houses and large gardens with ever more expensive displays of Christmas lights which must be consuming and wasting so much energy - especially when said lights are left on overnight for at least a month or more - I have never been to Blackpool however many private houses in my area must be giving those famous lights stiff competition - I wonder just how did we manage without such flummery when I was a kid? And no I am not Mrs Scrooge ;-)

When I was a kid, the most festive houses decorated their main front window with a little display of seven small bulbs on a stepped wooden stand that looked like candles. Others left their front room curtains open after dark so that people passing by could see the lights shining on their Christmas tree.

Yes I remember real candles - so dangerous no wonder there were so many house fires - also paper chains carefully made with a few wonderful bought decorations probably from Woolies - very little money spent on presents - boxes of handkerchiefs or chocolates given and received with grace and thanks - that really was the old fashioned spirit of Christmas!

Yes Ergendl - I have several of those and very decorative they are too - however all will be staying in the confines of their own cardboard boxes this year ;-)

I wholeheartedly agree with you! I remember Christmas celebrations were much simpler and meaningful when I was growing up. Now days you can get anything anytime of the year so the excitement of looking forward to tasing nuts and tangerines for example has gone.

I belong to a Sustainability Group in our village and have become so much more aware of the importance of recycling and reusing. I also try to use natural products for washing and cleaning purposes. I know we cannot change a way of life over night but we all have to start somewhere. Regards, Chrys

Yes Christmases past were quite magical and far simpler and meant more as my mother tried to invite people (usually older ones who lived alone) in for a Christmas dinner if at all possible - gifts were treasured and did not cost the earth - one did not have to be religious to bring pleasure to people - now it appears to be an exercise in profit making and one upmanship - no wonder so many find it difficult - having said all that it can be a very special family time but so often even that fails . . . . Hope you all have lovely ones though x

Everything seems too much trouble this year. We have an artificial fir tree in the loft, but getting it down, putting it together. Adding all the bits, then the lights, just ,seems too tiring. Will I miss it? What I might miss is picking up each tree ornament and remembering where it came from. My son has put some tiny lights on the little tree in our front garden, looks pretty and no bother! Iris x

Exactly the same here. I is a real struggle. I am hoping mine deteriorates so I can safely dispose of it and try something simpler in future. All the best

My attitude has been completely changed by Macmillan and oncology nurses very luckily as I am sure you have all spent years arranging wonderful Christmas festivities for all your families over the years - now it is time to concentrate on yourself - let others do what they wish and expend their energies - you do not have to go along with any of it - just do what you wish - no more no less - and rest up and enjoy the season in your own sweet way! If they cannot understand or accept that is not your problem! ;-)

What good advice - itbecomes second nature to put everyone first, but it no longer possible, hard but true. I often think of the words in a poem by Maya Angelou - roughly remembered as something like - don't think I'm lazy cos I'm sitting here" usually getting my breath back but still feel guilty.

It really has hit home with me Lyd12 - best advice I have had in years - I love Maya Angelou and that wonderful voice too . . . .
