When i got the call it was 5am on a saturday morning, by the time i got to wythenshaw it was just before 7 and to be honest its a bit of a blur. But i was taken straight to xray then back to the jim quick ward. There was a bit of waiting around till about 9 and i was then told the lungs were good and the op would be happening. Into a gown and groin shaved tthen into a pre op room with the guy that knocks you out.

The surgeon came and introduced himself had a brief chat and then all i can remember is someone trying to get the viens in the back of my hand to stand up to put a line in. All the time they were fantastic and talked to me about my dogs to take my mind off everything. The next thing i know i was waking up in icu on sunday morning with tubes and wires and being very hungry LOL. Ask away if u have more questions i know when i was on the list i did....x

Hi sky, the tube was removed pretty much as soon as my nurse realised i was properly awake and to be honest i cant really remember much about it, so i dont remember it being painfull or uncomfortable. The drains are a different matter, i had 5 and there is no set time that they stay in. They tend to take them out on different day's and they are uncomfortable. My first one was taken out after about 5 days and the last one after ten days. You can always ask for pain medication prior to them being removed. If you are sensative to pain they will give you morphine, but you have to ask. One thing i will say is make sure your bag is packed....my call came after i was on the list 8 days and i didnt expect it so soon LOL . I wont surgar coat it and say its a pleasent experience but for me it was worth it. There really isnt a set routine because every person is different and responds differently to the op. Anthing else ask away....

Sorry got side tracked and didnt read the whole message you sent. At first you will need to go clinic once a week for the first month then once a fortnight, now im every 6 weeks but they can phone you and ask you to come im at any time just to check whatever. Tablets, well at first they have you on about 40 a day( not kidding) but over the time your in there its reduced.im now on 15 a day and from what im told thats not a lot. If you have read caspiana s blog she pretty much nails the way some of them make you feel. Shaky, sick, and its a fight to keep the weight off because of the steroids. But hey , its a great excuse for putting the pounds on.

skylas in reply to simplesprout

Hi. I suffered from emphysema and had my transplant almost 6years ago. I was very weak and on oxygen in a wheelchair, when I got the call it was doubtful as to whether it would go ahead but my consultant said I was a fighter and the op went ahead. It was successful but I was very weak and in hospital nearly 3 months with few blips and getting my strength back. The staff were absolutely fantastic and have my full admiration. I am now enjoying life to the full thanks to them. Don.t hesitate to ask me anything at all. Good luck

seyre profile image
seyre in reply to skylas

Hi. I have a slight problem with my kidneys and some skin cancer but all manageable. I have regular check ups. Compared to how i was these problems are incidental and i have no regrets at all about my transplant. It's all a small price to pay for having the life I have. I wouldn't be here today otherwise.x
