Living within 50 metres (164 feet) of a major road can increase the risk of lung cancer by up to 10%, a report has said.

The study, written by King’s College London and released by a coalition of 15 health and environment NGOs, showed that proximity can also stunt children’s lung development by up to 14%.

Conducted across 13 different cities in the UK and Poland, the research suggested that air pollution contributes to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, heart failure and bronchitis.

Bad news for so many, many people. Do you believe that it's taken all this time for a report to be made. I mean my aged father of 93 years young could probably take a flying guess that living near to any main road with all that pollution will cause problems health wise,at some point?

Increased Population is the problem

Ì moved to house on through road near a lovely village in 1973. Green fields opposite , railway cutting at back but deep and heavily wooded . Now town 2 miles away has expanded, population has grown , more houses, more traffic, more schools, private school nearby has good exam results so more pupils , even more traffic to deliver these pupils from 20-30 miles away. Good schools attract more families, more houses again.

2019 ---quiet through road now 3 lanes wide with traffic lights control traffic that is turning to the school and access to the main road that leads to towns and cities and work Somehow still have large green field opposite with horses and alpacas until recently.

The town has lost its one main employer, and has become a dormitory town

The rail has become a transport system for commercial through traffic and increased rail services. Dont hear it, but the pollution is there ---

and here--and so am I.

Thank you for posting this, I saw this on the BBC website this morning and tried to post it but failed.

The results of the research are not really a surprise but the statistics are quite shocking.

I live within 50 yards of one of the main access routes to Southampton city center and the docks, also opposite my home a large car park from a retail site. So along with my smoking history no wonder I have Emphysema and Lung Cancer.

I was going to 'like' your reply but that's not really the right response.

We’ve known about this for years. I can remember being concerned about my children ( now 39 and 36) as their school was near one of the busiest roads in the country.
