Scientists have uncovered a possible explanation for the mental sluggishness that often accompanies illness.

An estimated 12M UK citizens have a chronic medical condition, and many of them report severe mental fatigue that they characterize as ‘sluggishness’ or ‘brain fog’. This condition is often as debilitating as the disease itself.

A team in the University’s Centre for Human Brain Health investigated the link between this mental fog and inflammation – the body’s response to illness. In a study published in Neuroimage, they show that inflammation appears to have a particular negative impact on the brain’s readiness to reach and maintain an alert state.

An interesting read and a suggestion that taking anti inflammatory drugs would help with ‘brain fog’ after inflammation. However don’t these drugs also have their own risks?

After having a major flare up with rheumatoid arthritis and being on alot of anti inflammatories cant say I noticed a lack of brain fog, but hope they keep looking at this as I would like to have some clear days. Thanks for posting 2greys x

Must have brain fog today. Managed to end up with 2 useless cards due to entering wrong numbers so had trip to bank to sort out. I do also have cold caught at visit to doctors surgery two days ago so maybe i can blame that rather than old age. I only went to surgery to get replacement rescue antibiotics too. Can do it on line in future when i need.

Fingers crossed
