Rubbish.

What happened to the dustbin man

Who on his wooden truck

Used to call right round the back

And wheel out all our muck

His great big patient shire type horse

Would wait for him outside

Producing all that lovely manure

From out of his backside

Now we have to drag bins out

To where it can be seen

Wash the bits that need it

And get them nice and clean

I think I'll leave my council tax

Round at my back door

Tell them come and get it

I don't deliver any more.

That’s so very true Don. It’s a nuisance having to drag the bins out. I think I’ll do the same with our council tax . 👍😘💖

in reply to sassy59

Don't for get to tell them to empty your bin whilst they are there. 😉😘xx

Me too Don. First thing i look for (then the weather). I can see the weather through the window but what is it going to do next!

House next door has leaking roof and our (flat) roofs join together so big problem . So need Mr Don's poems to cheer me up.

Thank you Don

in reply to Jaybird19

Oh dear, problems arising which are out of your control are always the biggest worry but usually turn out to be nothing. Perhaps;

The men could have come to fix the leak and are actually fixing it as we speak.

Good morning Mr.D and I'm in total agreement with you and @sassy59 and I'm going to tell 'um where they can find my council tax too ,lol 😂😂🙈🙉🙊.

Talking of bins,if our bin lids are even a millimetre open because they are cramed full, they refuse (no pun intended) to empty them. This is a little harsh ... If it was wide open I could understand it but it still leaves the problem of the cats and foxes pulling it all out all over the grass and guess where the wind generally blows it ...💨 ...right in front of my flat!! 😠😡. You can detect a slight feeling of resentment from me no doubt,so your rhyme today is so very true!💕

My dustbin men collect the bin from my house because I am disabled. At your age Don, my council would alsodo it for you. My lovely guys always wave to me.

in reply to

I'd be happy if they just left in outside my house instead of two houses down when they have emptied it. I complained that they left it blocking my drive so I couldn't get back in and it's become open warfare. They are contractors and take no notice of the council. I might launch my Binexist Party next year. My neighbours are very good in helping me if I need it and frankly, I wouldn't trust the binmen to get it past my car and camper without incident. It's a bit of good humoured fun behind it all really. 😉

in reply to

Have you called your council bin collection department? They send you a form to explain why you need assisted collections. There would be no problem for you. Then the company are informed. If they miss you or don't comply you go back to the council on the day. I had to do this just once and the company sent the lorry out again in the evening to do my bin. Remember these companies rely on the council for the contract. They cannot afford complaints but it all has to be done through the right channels. Good luck Don. Kick em into touch.

I have an aversion to officialdom, Littlepom, and have my own way of dealing with such matters which usually brings results whereas the other way usually makes things worse. It's just an irritation at present, there is so little in my bins that I walk better with them than without. Thanks for the information, I will certainly go that way if mine doesn't work. Not sure about the kicking bit though, there's some big tough lads in that team. 😅

in reply to

The lads are usually great, especially if they know that you need the help - mine are anyway. It’s the systems in place and the refuse companies who have to be negotiated and I appreciate that you hate doing that. I just wish that I could do it for you. I would have it sorted, no problem and no hassle. I have done it for several of my neighbours who were struggling along not realising that they were entitled to the assistance.

Another trip down memory lane. Awful job for the dustmen in those days. They wore a piece of leather at the back of their neck to stop the rubbish falling on them, sometimes maggots! Everything put in one bin then. I had an uncle who was a dustman, died of TB. For all today's troubles, wouldn't like to go back to those days.

in reply to Lyd12

Of course you are right Iris, I would be happy if they just came round and pulled the wheelie bins out and brought them back. We pay our tax and do our bit sorting and washing, but the council accept the lowest bid and the bin teams are under pressure to meet their targets, it's got all so complicated and I have my reputation as a grumpy old git to protect. 😉

Brilliant Don, I also Remember the Great Bin Men, who always got a Christmas Tip and a Mince pie(Home made) Always cheerful & Whistling a song. These today, they never put the bins back, Good Job Hubby is capable of Putting ours Back along with The Neighbours Bins, We have even put on all the Bins Florescent Numbers, To Help them. Think we should share our Council Tax out between the Neighbours. Thanks Don Another Great Poem. XXX C.

Loved the poem. On our little estate we have a 88 year old lady who puts out 3 other neighbours bins ' to help them out '

Roz

in reply to roz38

Yes, some of us have reached 88 in reasonably good nick. Old my old neighbours have moved and the new ones have children. I can bet that my bins with tiny bits of rubbish are bulging by the time the binmen come. But that's another story. 😉

With our council, if we are disabled in any way we can ask for bin assist. Your name is then put on a list and the bin men will take the bin out for you, empty it and then bring it in. My neighbour who has Agoraphobia and panic attacks is set up for this although she has no physical disabilities.

Oh yes! Where did you find THAT! Great going back and remembering how catchy that song was. Must get back to watching Pointless now!

I looked for a photo of an earlier date where the bins where tipped into a horse drawn cart until the cart was full, then a big lorry came with a fresh cart on the back which was lowered down, the horse changed over and the full cart winched into the lorry and taken to the tip. As a lad it was such an interesting operation that I used to follow the binmen until that happened. How did they know when the send the lorry? I was to shy to ask. 😄x

Remember those days well Don. I put in a few of the neighbours bins as they work full time. I cant stand it when the bin men leave rubbish on the road, they never pick it up which means I end up cleaning up the mess. I have told them off a few times, like you I have a reputation to keep up ha!

Not sure about other places but, where I live : if you are disabled in any way, elderly and frail you can get assisted bin collection, actually it's collected from your property instead of you wheeling it out to the pathway.

Contact your local council to find out if you can get this service.
