My name is Wendy and I am new on this forum and wondered if anyone on Rehab is totally exhausted after the session. Just wondered why this happens.

Hello Wendy and welcome.

As rehab is leaving you exhausted then have a word with the physiotherapist who is running it. Maybe you are doing too much too soon. This really needs a medically qualified person who is on the spot with you.

Rehab does get easier as you go along though.

Let us know what your physiotherapist says.

It is hard to begin with but I found after going every week that it started to get easier I'm also doing another rehab course to help with anxiety and breathing by doing tai chi I found it helped with the breathing

Wendy- Welcome to the site. It was pulmonary rehab that first got me moving back in 2006. I could hardly climb a flight of stairs at the time. The specialist nurses and physios got me to understand I could try a little bit more each time. I eventually got back into a gym and I still work 3x a week. To me exercise is one of one of my main recovery aids. I keep pushing my lungs to do more. I am forever grateful to the PR people for getting me started. And yes I was always exhausted in those early days. Best wishes. James M

Hi Wendy, Welcome!

Ive done 2 1/2 courses of PR and now do a weekly maintenance class that our area is lucky enough to have. I still often have to lie down the rest of the day after an energetic session.

But overall I couldnt live my life without it.

We people with copd use anything up to ten times more calories to breathe - so possibily even more when we are exercising. That takes a toll on the body.

Dp speak to your GP and dont push yourself beyond whatever feels ok. Im sure you'll soon be reaping the benefits. Good luck!

I’m on one at present you have a Borg scale of how you are feeling after each exercise they like you to get to a score of 4 or even a. 5 it’s doing you good if you can get to these scores

The idea of these courses is to get you fitter there’s no point going on them if you are not going to try and do more and just sit around and not push yourself you see people on these courses and some don’t try

You can go on them every 12 months I look at it like having an MOT and Service it gets you back upto a level and I myself try to keep to it

Sometimes you can’t do anything when you get a flare up but it’s good to get out and meet others ,

We run a self help group in our area The Huffers & Puffers meet every Tuesday to do exercise and th3n have a natter and tea and biscuits

🙋 Hello to you @glenbuchat1 ,aka Wendy and glad you've found us. Once you've mastered the art of getting the best out of Health Unlocked you'll see they have not only BLF but also many others that may be of interest to you.

Like many of us on this site, I've got COPD severe stage or whatever they're calling it today, lol 😂😂. I've been on 1 PR course but after getting an infection I unfortunately had to leave and naughty ,naughty me have declined an offer to restart as I didn't feel well enough. My aim is to retry after Christmas all things being good🙏. I do remember feeling exhausted the first 3/4 lessons but it does get easier ..... But not too easy as it is trying to push us to not be afraid of exercise if we do it properly etc.

So welcome, welcome, welcome Wendy and hopefully you'll come back and tell us how things are getting along!💞

Hi Wendy and welcome to the site. I havent been on a pr course as the local ones are a little too far for me without a car. I do get alot of exercise though as I walk everywhere and do my garden etc. I like to push myself, when I walk to the supermarket it usually takes between 25-20 mins on a normal walk but I try to make myself walk quick and can time it for 12 mins if I try hard, this makes my lungs and heart work harder so feel better. When I have a flare up of rheumatoid I cant do it quickly so take my time and somedays I can hardly walk at all. I think it all depends on how you are feeling but it does get better x

Hi, I did reply earlier but it has disappeared. Sorry, will have to be quick and just in case its may appear unfriendly, it certainly isnt, it's just I'm in Nottm city hospital at the moment and am very poorly but not as poorly as my phone and texting finger.

Right. Exhaustion. I seem to have put this so many times. If you are into sports, put a recording of your favourite track eventing the olympics on...you tube had millions save time and wind on to the end of the race....where are the competitors, most on the deck, wrapped in thermal blanket gasping for air. After a few minutes, theyve recovered enough to get to their feet and see about the results. So the answer is.....most definitely you are doing everything RIGHT. If you weren't exhausted, you weren't giving it your max, you were free wheeling..so well done you... show the others the way to go. The reason, as one of the other posts says it gets easier as it goes on, is -sorry- it has ceased to be exercise or rather effective exercise. If you have to up a flight of stairs five times a day, that is the norm....not exercise. You can make it exercise by doing it against the clock or carrying a heavy load or something but after a couple of days, it too becomes the norm. That is one of the reasons we have a borg trail. How long did it take you reach the borg limit and how long did it take you to recover normal breathing

Hòpe you understand this but if you need help to understand my gibberish, I'll try again later. I'm in hospital as I said and so trying to type into my phone when I the ventilator is hard. For a start, my bi vocals wont balance on my mask. Got some news for the group but it may be a couple of days before I get to post it.

I believe you have to gradually push yourself to work that bit harder and slow down if it causes problems Wheezyof has got it right you need the professionals to guide you through it, it does get easier and once you get into it you will see the benefits. Good luck
