The Pillar Box.

I feel sorry for the pillar box

In his coat of red

With emails and the media

He rarely now gets fed

Long gone are all those busy days

When his tum was full of fun

With saucy cards from holidays

Or homely cards for mum

Easter cards were once the thing

Seem now to have fallen off

Along with cheers for passing exams

Or get well for that cough

No more for the new baby cards

Or granddad has finally gone

No one posts love letters now

To Janet, Joan or John

But worst of all is Christmas time

The busiest days of all

So very few are sent these days

But pillar box still stands tall.

All hail the pillar box

And our lovely Don

Both we cannot be without

Would miss if they were gone.

Thank you Don 😘💖💋

Thank you Carole. 😘 I thought this might be an interesting subject. We can learn a little about them whilst we lean against them gasping for breath. 😁

Another great rhyme thanks Don, and fascinating links too. I wouldn’t have imagined it could be so interesting to read about mail boxes! I still like to send and receive letters and cards 📮

The Red Box still lives on with our Traditions. I posted two Birthday Cards to Spain, My Great Granddaughter is 6 Tomorrow inside her card is a Special "You are 6"Badge, love from Nana, her Papa will be 33, No Badge for him, just our Love. Technology is a Great thing, for Tomorrow I shall be watching Amelia's Birthday party Live on Screen. I shall see The Card that our Great Postal service Delivered to her, with her name on the Envelope, Some things can never change, we don't want them to. Thank You Don once again, Master of Beautiful Words. have a Lovely Sunday with your Beloved Midge. Besos to You. XXXXX

in reply to Hacienda

I am so pleased to read this. Using the postal service shows that you really care for the people you contact. It narks me seeing those ridiculous birthday greetings to close relatives on FaceBook. 😘x

Thank you for that reminder we all must send a letter or a card

Addressed of course to our dear Don who is our resident bard

But i worry for his dog called Midge who will work overtime

Opening those letter and cards that always arrive on time

Of course she may get her revenge and chew them as they drop

By which time i reckon Master Po you will tell us all to stop. :)

They are national treasures like the phone boxes and must be preserved. :) x

Hi Don

I didn’t know you knew Kiera Knightley. You kept that quiet !

But when I think about it I always thought you were A list.

Take care , Superstar

in reply to Corin1950

Oh yes Kiera Knightley is a great friend of mine.🤥 I'll just pop to google to remind who she is. The girl in the photo though is Dominique, Exhibitions Officer at the BPMA who I have also often had to fight off. 😇🤥x

So did you win or lose that particular fight Cap'n?

Another excellent poem Cap'n - you are just like a very fine wine - improving with age :-)

in reply to majji

I think you say that to all the chaps, you've said it to me twice. 😂 Good to see you posting Margaret, hope you are feeling a bit more comfortable. 😘

Oh dear Cap'n that's the trouble with chemo, it renders one's brain incommunicado -however I am sure the reason I have said it (or written) it twice is for greater emphasis! ;-)

I needed cheering up this evening Don and I'm glad to say you have done it for me. Keep them coming, this is just what I need at the moment. Thank you. Chrys

in reply to RoadRunner44

I'm sorry you needed cheering up Chrys and so glad if I helped in some way. I write solely for that purpose and nothing else. In fact I don't think I could write as I do if I didn't have in my mind all the time this group of lovely people seeking and giving advice whilst suffering from the dreadful diseases affecting our lungs. Don and the faithful Midge xx

Not really Chrys, writing is part of my therapy and I'm glad if it helps others as well as helping me. 😊

True Don . It was always nice to receive the cards in the post as a child.

Ahh yes along with the red phone box they are being used less and less. I still use the trusted pillar box and am about to post 2 birthday cards. We have a GOLD one in the local town as a swimmer got a gold medal in the Olympics. I also have been interested in the past to find out when each pillar box was brought to life by looking at the royal name on them. x

Great poem.

Oh you've done a splendid job Mr D., by reminding us that our red letter boxes are indeed a national treasure and we must keep using them whenever we are able.

Sorry i should've started my reply in my usual way to you ..... Good morning Mr.D and apologies for being so late in my reply to your red letterbox rhyme. 🇬🇧🚛💌

No need to apologise SH, it's a pleasure to hear from you at any time of the day. I'm relying on you to super-glue yourself to any pillar box that you hear is under threat. 😉

( we have a gold pillar box near where I live in honour of a famous athlete!)

You do have a nice traditional round post box . I do have one about 12 ft from front door but it is a box on a pole. It is red and has all the correct adornments and has lots of visitors but it always looks starved and thin.

I do look forward to your rhymes. Wish i could do that. Thank you.

in reply to Jaybird19

Those pill boxes on a pole are imposters, telephone boxes are being replaced with imposters too. Avoid them and be careful what you wish for, I sometimes feel like a sausage machine without an off switch. 🙄

A great poem Don-1931!

It’s a sorry world where the written communication has passed on just like my list of family & friends that I send cards too! Many reasons I think: many important members have passed away or the generations to far (great great & they don’t bother either! )

There are my children & theirs, only 1 of my parents generation still here, & a few cousins & families still in contact! My nieces & nephews only a few care to contact men! But in general the younger ones it’s electronic, my age generally phone so my list I send to gets smaller & smaller!!

Shame when I have a passion for cards & even sell at craft fairs with my sister!

in reply to Jessie8ruff

Sad thoughts Jessie, my son is dead and my 60 year old daughter is unmarried and childless. When she dies my family branch will wither and die with her. It doesn't do to dwell on such thoughts. Cards were a long time ago.
