More Breathless than normal and low stats on exercise

Hello everyone hope you are all as well as you can be. Is it possible to have an exerberation (spelling) without having a cold? John has been more short of breath lately and when he goes on our treadmill at home, with 5l of oxygen his stats go down to 85 and mainly come back quicker to 93/94 but taking a bit longer lately. His portable oxygen only goes up to 5l so at a loss to what to do about it. He started taking steroids again for a week (which he hated) but his breathing didn’t improve so was wondering if this is what they call an exerberation. Carole

Hi Carole, John could have some sort of infection so maybe should see a doctor as his breathing hasn’t improved. Best to get him checked over.

Wishing you both well. Xxxx

Although this says for COPD flare-ups, I can see no reason that it does not apply to IPF as well.

"A flare-up might be triggered by an infection or there may be no apparent reason."

Hi Carole this is exactly how I’ve been. I’ve done 5 days of steroids which have made absolutely no difference. My doctor could hear crackles and wheezing but no infection. She did say about the weather affecting breathing which I know only too well. She also wondered if I had a small hole in one of my air sacks which apparently can happen with emphysema. Hence she is ordering an X-ray and I’m also seeing the chest specialist. I have an appointment with the oxygen nurse next Friday too. I’ll let everyone know when I have any outcomes Barbs x

Hi, I have had non infection exacerbations when something has caused inflammaton. I usually have no idea what the cause is. Probably best to get your doctor to check John.

I once had a what the community respiratory nurse said was a exacerbation caused by paint fumes.
