Dobbin's replacement.

I wrote recently about Dobbin the horse that pulled by grandfather's bakery van and posted a photo which showed the horse and van with my mother holding the reins. I mentioned that at some later date Dobbin was replaced by a motorcycle and box-sidecar which my mother also drove. I was asked to post a photo of her on the bike so here it is.

Lovely picture Don. I expect it was rare in those days that a woman would ride a motorbike and sidecar. Even in the 60's my Mum rode a little Honda moped to work which was rare also. Well done your Mum.

I agree very rare for a woman to ride a motor bike in those days. Not so unusual nowadays, with lots of girls now riding very high powered sportsbikes capable of 180 mph plus.

She didn't seem to think it any big deal. It was the beginning of the 'roaring twenties' when women started doing 'things' including voting. Having a sidecar on probably made it less daring, but I know she enjoyed it even though she missed old Dobbin. I think Ma was a bit of a flapper in her day and was spoilt rotten by her dad being the youngest of four. Something by dad complained about later in life. 😂

Oh, thank you Don! Your photo yet again illustrates days gone bye. I am in my seventies and often have a lovely chat with my aunt who was brought up with me. One memory I have is of the milkman and his milk cart drawn by a very friendly horse. My mother would run out with a jug and Truman the milk would ladel out a pint of milk into her jug . She would then cover it with a muslin cover with beads hanging on it which weighted it and stopped it from blowing off. It is nice to be able glimpse how others lived and how things have changed so much.

Great picture Don it's really nice to have family photos to look back on. My sister used to deliver milk and she let me go with her sometimes but I must say the horse was so big compared to little me at the side of it that it frightened me to death 😂 Though I remember it was very docile and new all the round itself....Happy memories. Xxx

I used to ride around with the milkman when I was very young. I don't know how that came about, he must have been a family friend. Very few customers bought their milk in bottles and I remember being very surprised when the milkman filled up an empty bottle and put a cardboard cap on when he ran short of bottled milk. I must have been hygiene conscience even then. It didn't occur to be that he might have a supply of clean bottle kept for that purpose. 🙄

Don you are do lucky to have these photos. My grand father had a magic lantern which originally was gas powered! There are lots of slides for this but my younger sister inherited all the family stuff it in the house and it is not easy to get it out . It is now electric. There are slides going back to 1888 dated pictures of cartoons from newspaper, and views of llandudno with Victorian dresses and bathing cabins but very few of his family. My parents w hen they were courting but ve ry few more. They married in 1936 and the war afterwards meant other things were more important, I suppose. Tey are not easy to look at but they are there . Todays photos stored on computers are not likely to be available in the future.

Thank you for publishing your mothers photos

Wow Don wasnt your Mum a real modern gal, good on her, just love it x

She lived to be 94 and could still read the newspaper without glasses. In fact, I don’t remember her being ill at all, part from her hysterectomy back in the late 1940’s I think it was, to which she frequently referred. I gathered it was my fault in some way since I didn’t arrive until six years after my sister, when I was expect some years earlier. I never quite understood that.🤔

Could do with some of what she had, 94 and no glasses, what a constitution, but then there wasnt the same problems them days with companies messing with food etc. Looks like you have good genes and will live to a ripe old age, the queen will be sending you a card thats for sure x

Afternoon Mr.D and just imagine the looks of wonder and jealousy that your dear Mum must have had as she merrily went on her motorbike with side car. I'd take a bet that she was the only female delivery service in the town. What a great photo. It must make you very proud to know how hard your parents worked, against all the adversity in those times. Of course back then there was no health & safety so she was able to wear her bag and looked very fetching!👒💞.
