Hi and Gooday everybody !

Just started on Colomycin nebbed twice a day, after hospital kindly colonised me with pseudomonas 6 months ago , can you tell me of your experience with this drug and whether or not you have seen any positive result and if so how long to get any benefit. all comments welcome as I am pretty desperate. Thanks and God Bless all who suffer. John.

Hi John. It's a good drug and works on a continually nebbed basis for many. Unfortunately I can't tolerate it as it makes me breathless. I neb ceftazidime instead. I hope that it keeps the pseudo numbers low enough for you to lead a pretty normal life.

Hello, johnhawk, I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis five years ago. I nebulised colomycin twice a day for the past three years. During the Summer months my consultant suggested I nebulise colomycin just once a day which I have been doing. I assume I will shortly be back on twice a day as the Winter months loom. You ask if it's done me any good? Yes, the pseudos were present and apparently Colomycin is the best medication so far, for treating them. After regularly testing for the kind of bacteria present the last test didnt show up for pseudos! At first I was pleased but was told they are clever and have the ability to hide but will still be there. Up until now I havent had any problems so I must assume the colomycin is working.. I am hoping to see my consultant soon and no doubt another sputum sample taken. As I am feeling ok regarding the bronchiectasis I am hoping my lungs will again show the pseudos are under control.

Out of interest, you don't say you have bronchiectasis so perhaps you could confirm this is what you have been diagnosed with.

OH has been on Colomycin for well over a year and tolerates it. It has kept the pseudomonas down but he has had multiple other infections this year. Unfortunately they don’t always know what bacteria is involved because sputum samples now tend to come back negative, possibly due to the Colomycin masking them.

He uses the Sidestream Plus Reusable Nebulizer with Pari Filters.

I wash the set in warm soapy water after each use because Colomycin is sticky and easily blocks the jets. I then rinse it and sterilise in a baby bottle steam steriliser. This keeps them in good condition.

Word of warning - best to nebulize in a well ventilated room, preferably without other folk around as you don’t want them to inhale antibiotics.

Good day to you John

I have nebulised colomycin twice a day for well over a year. It has certainly kept the the pseudomonas at bay but I’ve had a few other infections during this time. I had a lot of tightness in my lungs when I first started using it so I also nebulise salbutamol at the same time. Good luck I hope it works for you.
