Hi House1, please don't cry you are never alone, we stick together like a family. Someone is always here to listen. It does you good to feel sorry for yourself now and again. Have a lovely day and take care of yourself 😊 Bernadette xx

I can relate to this and I’m sorry you’re feeling so down. The only way I go out is if I have done my treatments first (inhalers, chest physio and nebulisers) otherwise I’m coughing the whole time. Don’t worry.. take the time to figure out what works for you . Warm drinks especially herbal teas including ginger honey lemon thyme liquorish root also helps me a lot. When I’m struggling I sip these all day.

Hopefully some of these tips help you .

Hello House1,

I have bronchiectasis and bronchiolitis obliterans. (FEV 30%)

Yes, sometimes I have a cry. Mostly when it would be normal to be upset. My lung problems used to get me depressed, angry, resentful, envious... The list of emotions goes on.

However, I made some changes to my life. Not all by choice. I gave up work and very active hobbies. (My work with children in a primary school, mountain walking and exploring old castles).

I took up my other hobbies, reading, knitting, playing scrabble and gardening. The gardening I do on my hands and knees, no digging or heavy lifting.

I joined a British Lung Foundation Support Group : Breathe Easy.

I follow my medication and lung clearance exercises, I eat well and drink plenty of decaf tea, coffee, herbal teas, water and fruit juice.

Yes my life is different, yes I miss some things from before but I have a new life, it's a good life, just a bit different.

If you contact The British Lung Foundation they will give you lots of support and advice.

Keep in touch on here, we are all good friends xxx

Sorry you have bronchiectasis House and you are allowed to feel down and cry BUT then you have to make sure you get the best consultant, treatment and self managment. I’ve had bronch since I was a baby, so I don’t know what it feels like to be diagnosed, as I’ve always lived with it. I don’t know if you are mild or severe. If you are mild then you must work hard to keep it that way.

You need to make sure you get a good respiratory consultant with a special interest in cf/bronciectasis, which are usually within the big city hospitals. You don’t say what pills you are on. You need to be more in control of getting rid of the mucus and then hopefully you won’t be coughing all the time. Your consultant should refer you to a physio and you would have to do this yourself every day.

Wishing you well and glad you have found us.

Cx

I think it would be good for you if you could get out a bit. Why don’t you look on the BLF site to see where the nearest breatheasy group is.if you are lucky ,they might be able to organise a lift for you.

Hi House, I too am a lifelong bronch. I cannot add anything to the advice that you have been given, especially by cof drop. The most important thing is to get control of it through self management. Then you will be able to work your self treatment around your lifestyle. Getting a bronch expert as your consultant is crucial. GPs know virtually nothing about bronch, tending to treat it the same as COPD. and general resp consultants do not have the training and experience. It does sound as though your condition is being managed very badly at the moment and only a true bronch expert can improve it. Get on top of it and on top of the medics. Being in control does help to reduce the miz days and believe me, Cof and I have had plenty of experience of those.

Oh yes! There are days. Exercise is a good antidote. Music too! Unfortunately I go into shouting mode, not recommended. Recommend Music, good and loud and a bit of a bop x

Hi House, I was diagnosed with bronch in 2017 but have had it for years before that and was wrongly treated for asthma. I went through a period of feeling sorry for myself but once I joined this site and read everything I could about this disease I realised that knowledge was the key. It took a while to find an inhaler that helps, I use Seretide when necessary. I make sure that I clear my lungs everyday, I use mucodyne to thin this out. I have a healthy diet and not much processed food, plenty of fruit/veg. I take vit d, magnesium, k2 mk7 and get plenty of exercise. I make sure that I use a nasal guard every time I go out as I cant afford to get any infections, apart from the lung problem I take methotrexate for r.a. so have a compromised immune system. Sounds like you need to get rid of the infection first. As everybody above has advised get yourself a specialist that can help you. I do hope you feel better soon and get onto an even keel x

It is quite normal to get depressed and upset when faced with the conditions problems daily. You have been given some helpful advice from long term sufferers I have bronch too but a mild case . I have cut back on the exercise I used to do and now walk instead of going to the gym, doing aqua aerobics etc as I found I was always getting ill after a few days of those. I joined this forum which I found to be of great value. I read, occasionally swim, meet up with friends for lunch and like to be outside for walks as I feel mentally and emotionally better afterwards. Take care. We are all different and what suits one person may not suit another. I also was forceful in seeing a consultant at one point as I was coughing and crying nearly all day and was rewarded with a different inhaler that seems to be better for my condition. x

I am in a similar situation House1. All other replies give excellent advice. I would only add: try and get yourself referred to aPulmonary Rehab group. Excellent advice given on exercise, diet and lifestyle. Good luck!

It’s ok to cry. It’s ok to feel sorry for yourself. I have copd and arthritis and when i have a flare up i cry and get very down because it interferes with my life if i let it. Please try not to get depressed though, depression can take a hold and then difficult to lift our spirits again.

I hope things go well for you.
