Pneumonia

I have had pneumonia a fortnight ago and thankfully was told the infection had gone last week. Still have bad middle back pains and night sweats. Is this normal? Also feel a bit lightheaded from time to time

I’m only guessing but I think you’re likely to still be at the convalescing stage, where these things happen. My daughter was in her twenties when she surprised us all by catching pneumonia. It took weeks, if not months for her to recover fully. It’s a biggie!

But I don’t know all the medical possibilities so do ask your GP soon to be sure. Hope things pick up soon for you 🌸

I was discharged from hospital last week, after being diagnosed with Pneumonia. I have improved a lot this past few days, the night sweats stopped when I finished my antibiotics and apart from some extreme fatigue and mild back pain I have recovered fairly well . I hope you soon see the back of the sweats and start to feel better

Do go back to your GP this week, while you're immunity is compromised it's so easy to get another infection.

Take loads of vits especially Vit C throughout the winter to help fight off other bugs. Many of us also take a capsule of probiotic after antibiotics too - my GP used to prescribe it along with abs but unfortunately now buy our own.

Take it easy, pneumonia takes quite a while to completely recover from. P

3 years ago I suffered respiratory failure due to viral pneumonia and spent 19 days in ICU and it took nearly 2 years to recover enough to say I feel OK but I have never regained former strength or energy levels but then I am 73 next birthday on lots of meds for various problems. Be gentle and patient with yourself and it will get better.

Pneumonia takes it out of everyone Rachel, Ive had a good few times with it - it takes months to recover as many here have said. Dont be hard on yourself if it doesnt happen all at once. Take care of yourself :)

Thank you for your reply. Is it normal to feel extremely tired and dizzy afterwards? Thank you

Id say yes from my own experience, at least to the very tired part which lasts for ages but does go away eventually. Feeling dizzy could be for a number of reasons and if its troubling you then you should ask your GP.

Thank you so much for replying I appreciate it as never had this before and it scares me how long it all takes. Do you mind me asking how long you were tired for? Been unwell now for three weeks although thankfully mainly just the extreme exhaustion and dizziness now. I was dizzy before I got the pneumonia with labyrinthitis so wondering if it has come back with the illness. Thank you

It's not impossible that the labyrinthitis could come back - you have such a load of inflammation when you get pneumonia that it can trigger thing - but you should still speak to your doctor.

I cant remember how long being tired lasted - I never expected it to be otherwise and just tried to do a little bit more each day, however tiny. It took me a year to get back to where I was before I became ill with it. It's not easy so just be kind to yourself and try not to stress about it. It's a long road back to baseline health but it happens eventually.

I finished my antibiotics 3 weeks ago after pneumonia and sepsis. I thought I had a vomiting bug and I was very lightheaded with it. Phoned the doctor 4 days after it started who sent me to hospital. I have copd anyway. I'm still breathless, get tired easily and still getting chest aches. I did wonder how long it took to recover from severe pneumonia so I'm glad to find this thread. Hope you feel better soon x
