Before being discharged from hospital following 9 day stay with yet another dose of pneumonia (2nd in 6 weeks) I asked about having a nebuliser to use at home as more relief from that than my spacer and ventolin but was refused for the third time,, although when you first get admitted that’s what they give you. They reckon the inhaler and spacer are more effective in the long term, anyone one else been told this. Quite a lot of the elderly patients have them at home so don’t understand. I’m 64 with Emphysema and Bronchiectasis oh and newly diagnosed right sided heart failure xx

Have you tried asking your GP or perhaps contacting your local respiratory team. I use mine every day,it really helps. It makes it easier for me to cough the mucus up,so that it doesn’t sit in. My lungs

You can purchase a nebuliser online. I was given mine after I was admitted overnight to A&E. I never use it as I find it increases my heart rate . A friend of mine purchased her nebuliser online and you can get the medication for it from your surgery.

I’m the same as you. Found then really good in hospital, but they won’t lend/ give me one. Instead I spend about 2 hours trying to clear my chest. I’m thinking of buying one but difficult to choose an inexpensive reasonable model. I had a really long post and replies on the forum about a month ago

I would willingly buy one but I know my GP isn’t too keen on nebulisers either so don’t think he would prescribe the meds for it. His view is it only does the same as the spacer and vent.

The nebules are a higher dose than aerosol inhalers so even when a spacer is used you are getting a greater amount. Salbutamol has an effect on the heart and some patients experience tachycardia. I a wondering if they are reluctant to prescribe nebules due to your right sided heart failure. Have you asked your respiratory team/GP why they don't want you to have nebulized medication? If not, find out exactly why and try to make your case for using a nebulizer. You might have to buy one yourself though. The other thing to consider is that you do need to take care of the machine and accessories.

If you still have the nebuliser, I would gladly use it. Obviously I would pay postage.

Thanks jo

Have you given the nebuliser away yet. ?

I replied yesterday and was hoping to be lucky.

Please , if you have given it to someone else, please could you let me know, and I’ll have to keep on searching.

I hope you are managing without your husband. It’s a tough time.

Thanks - jo
