Have emphysema just seen lung doctor today he said I shouldn’t be getting symptoms they had to abandon my spirometery test as was in too much pain in right side when I tried to blow in machine now he is sending me to a speech therapist as he thinks my coughing is affecting my vocal chords don’t know what to make of this

I'm sorry Shortlungs , I don't quite understand. You have Emphysema, but you shouldn't be getting symptoms?? Did they investigate the pain? xx

He says my emphysema isnt bad enough to cause symptoms and just said pain is from coughing

Are you on a steroid inhaler? When I was on Seratide my voice was affected.....

I get pain in my left side when I've extended my lungs too much and stretched the little muscles between my ribs. Maybe that's what's happened to you when you cough. At least the doctor is referring you on to follow this up. Hopefully you will get more help from the speech therapist.

Have had ct scan done only shows a bit of emphysema and some bronchitis but he wasnt worried about it and said go and enjoy my life as i wasnt bad feel like i am suffocating all the time

I have emphysema and while coughing up mucus this morning I hurt my back coughing so hard.

I don't understand why drs refuse to use old remedies. I thank god mine does. If you can take codeine it suppresses your cough if you're like me and can't the dr gives me hydrocodone. I hate the taste so I take 1/2 tsp and it works for me as I have broken, cracked and bruised ribs from coughing.

Warning this is an opiate drug and if misused can be addictive that's why drs don't like it but if you use it sparingly and only when necessary it does save alot of discomfort.

As Flicky 1 has mentioned. Are you on a Steroid inhaler such as Seretide? If so that can affect your Vocal chords.

Always gargle straight after taking any inhalers, but especially with steroid ones. They can affect your speech and vocal folds (chords) but so can reflux which many with copd have, so you could ask your doctor about that.

Is that why my acid reflux is getting worse. I couldn't figure it out. I take ranitidine, tums, crackers, ginger ale, I don't know what else to do. I take spuriva and Breo but always gargle. HELP PLEASE

Oh I forgot I have the whole alphabet of lung disease asthma. Bronchitis, copd, emphasema. Acid reflux bad

Talk to your doctor ladygrace. And you could try sleeping always on the left hand side, and leaving 3 hours between eating and going to bed.

Keep going back to the doctor if you have unresolved issues - dont give up.

They did some kind of blood test because when I mentioned COPD and acid reflux she said they had nothing to do with eachother do now I'm confused

Been put on tablets for reflux will see if they help

I cant understand why he stated you should not be getting symptoms, if you have emphysema you are bound to have problems, i think an ex ray should be done first but as far as a speech therapist is concerned i cant understand that,

Had x Ray done and also ct scan he showed me the scan and said yes emphysema but shouldn’t have the symptoms as I only have it in the top off my lungs he thinks it is more anxiety and the cough I have is just a habit then he said he thinks I am damaging my vocal chords because of it so now referred to speech therapist
