Hello, I have bronchiectasis and obviously have to clear the mucus daily. However, whenever I finish eating any food it seems to encourage mucus to form. I spoke to my consultant about it and he said it was quite a common occurance, but didnt know why this is. Because I expect it now I always have tissues to hand. Strange, but I think that when we eat it starts the digestive system moving and the movement loosens the mucus just like an acapella does. I take it as a bonus now as any mucus out is better than in.

Once a while, doing nebulisation thorax clears up..... using 2.5 mg salbutamol

I wonder if it has some second effect... ??

l would look at intolerances - gluten, dairy & sugar.

Yes, many allergic reactions can affect breathing. This should be investigated, it does have potentially, life threatening consequences. Better safe than sorry.

The obvious answer is don't eat them

Hi I know your digestive system gets a lot more sluggish with age so maybe it's that? It probably is best if she avoids this type of food in future. x

We can develop intolerance and/or allergies at any age, particularly when getting older.

I have always had digestive intolerance to mould & fungi ie that white bloom on fresh grapes & some cheeses (so no wine 😭), mushrooms amongst other things.

Then when seeing consultant for lung issues he ordered allergy tests, reaction to mould was very high and reaction to aspergillus was medium.

I won't eat processed food like muffins anymore, you just don't know what cheap rubbish (like palm oil) is in them.

Suggest she cuts out the things you've mentioned to see the difference.

Hi Karmaji, anything I eat that is dry seems to bring on a coughing fit which in turn brings up the mucus, just make sure you have a glass of water to hand. I do tend to keep away from them if possible, but may be as well to get checked out for allergies , just in case x

Could be a reaction to an allergy to what is in the bread, biscuit, muffin.
