Morning all,

I have stage 3 COPD and am wondering if and when I should apply for a blue badge. What did you all do?

Hi, I would apply now I can't see why you can't get it. Hope you are well and good luck with your application. Have a great day and take care of yourself 😊 Bernadette xx

Hi there. I also have stage 3 COPD and Bronchiectasis and applied for a blue badge earlier this year but was declined as I couldn’t provide sufficient proof of being unable to walk very far. It was an online application which consisted of mainly yes/no answers and nowhere to add further information. Madness ! Hope you have better luck than me xx Rose

Hi, thanks for your reply. I’ve been told it also depends on which council you fall under

I believe so, East Riding are stingy

It is done locally so I'm sure that's part of it. The thing to remember is that they are not interested it what complain or illness you have. It's based solely on how far you can walk without unbearable pain. If they interview you may have to do a test walk. We all have good days and bad days so it's not cheating showing what you are like on a bad day if it happens on a good day. They have tightened up on applicants recently I believe.

Hi

I would chat with Biddy benefits advisor at BLF

healthunlocked.com/blf/post........

If you claim the mobility component of PIP then a blue badge is automatic.

To apply yourself fill in the enclosed form, again with advice from BLF,

gov.uk/apply-blue-badge

Funny you should say that. I’ve just completed my pip form and it’s ready and waiting for hubby to take to post box xx

When I applied for a new blue badge after I had moved counties I opted to get the forms and fill them in, as this gives you the opportunity to enclose copies of consultants’ reports and any other information that would help the application. I had no problem getting a renewal but they had definitely read all the reports because there were various ticks on them. I think this is probably better than online for your first application xx

I phoned up and they filled up the form for me - it took a good 40 minutes and they were ever so helpful. I was approved there and then, sent on repeat prescriptiom forms, a photo etc. and got the badge within the week.

They were keen on breathlessness - bathing, getting dressed as well as walking. I didn't exaggerate and was totally honest about where I was and I think rhat helped.

Good luck.

If you are unable to walk very far without stopping to regain your breath then that is the time to apply.

In the good old days each Councils had their own way of allowing Blue Badges. But it seems that they do now like to give them out to those that have PIP/DLA Mobility. However this is not written in stone and it should be given to anyone that finds it difficult to walk 20 metres in severe discomfort or pain? I did get one before I had PIP Mobility but I backed it up with a bucket load of letters from my many consultants for each condition.

I wish you all the best on getting one.
