BEST KIND OF Humidifier

RoadRunner44 profile image
37 Replies

After reading some posts about using a humidifier I am thinking of getting one. There are so many on line I am unsure of which to buy. As some of you will remember, I have bronchiectasis and use an ACAPELLA to help cough up the phlegm. Unfortunately I don't sleep well and would like some advice as to which kind I should be looking for. Looking forward to hearing some answers. Chrys

Snap, I have been looking at humidifiers too....there is a huge price difference between models.

I did buy a basic model a few years ago, but I binned it after a few uses as it made pools of water on my floor . Cleaning was a problem to prevent mould too.

So I am still looking for a reliable humidifier.

Hi again, I typed ' humidifier ' into the search box on the top left hand corner of this page , and revealed some previous replies and queries on humidifiers.

During my restless night I have been googling the pros and cons ....the risks and benefits of the units , and how to clean them.

Still undecideded especially after the disastrous one that I bought a few years ago.

Yes, I feel the same way. I will ask my doctor on Tueday what his opinion is and whether it will be OK to use with my bronchiectasis. Will report back then. Chrys.

I bought mine from Amazon.there is a photo on my home page. I have one that is small enough to fit on my bedside table . I use it for my Olbas Oil and sometimes for other essential oils like lavender or sage etc.

My last post states how the Olbas Oil in my Humidifier has sorted my mucus and blocked nose etc. I only paid £14.99 Best Money ever spent. X Sheila.

Hi, Thanks for the information. One other thing, one post mentioned cleaning the humidifier. Is that a difficult thing to do? Chrys

No mine is only small. Don't really need cleaning. I rinse it out if I am using different Oil. X

Got mine today! How long does the 150ml mist last ? I’m a bit worried it might run dry in the night when I’m asleep. ??? I’m loving the colours 😀😀😀😀😀😀

It lasts for a few hours. I don't leave mine on all night. I have it on for a few hours before bedtime as I watch t.v. in my bedroom. Yes the colours are lovely. I use Olbas Oil in mine but also have lavender and other oils which I use sometimes.. Hope you have a good night's sleep.xx Sheila

It sounds lovely and relaxing. How will I know if it's the right thing to have? It worries me that I could be doing the wrong thing. What are pros and cons of a humidifier? I want to help myself as much as possible and prepared to do anything to keep independent and enjoy life as much as possible.

Well for starters it beats hanging your head over a bowl of boiling water.😱 I put Olbas Oil in mine and it bursts steam every couple of minutes. I also use Sage and Lavender oils for relaxation.. works for me and the Olbas Oil has cleared my cough Me mucas 🙌🙌

My Respiritory Nurse at the surgery told me about the Olbas Oil

She recommended either in a bowl of hot water or in a humidifier

So should be ok. Agrees with me so hopefully you will benefit also. It can't do any harm anyway. Sheila.

Hi, I would like to find out does steam help you with phelem, also do you feel sever pain in your ribs chest and shoulder?

RoadRunner44 profile image
RoadRunner44 in reply to Amina123

Hi, The simple answer is yes, steam does seem to loosen phlegm. What I found when it was stubborn to expell, the steam helped to thin it down so became easier to cough up. However, there are times when I have a dry cough and very little phlegm is present. The physio said I should only use the acapella when there are signs of mucus ready to be coughed up. I am now able to judge my bronchial situation and try not to cough until the time is right. Why not just get a small bowl of very hot water with some salt added to it and hold your head over the bowl with a towel encompassing the bowl. Try breathing in through your nose steadily . This works for me when I need it.

As for the pain in your shoulder, I developed a sort of frozen shoulder about a month ago. I couldn't use my arm or lift it up. Ever painful. However it only lasted for a week or so. I haven't experienced any pain in my ribs or chest. I suggest you contact your doctor in the morning as combined with the mucus and pains you have it sound like you might have an infection an need appropriate antibiotics. Put your mind at rest and contact your doctor first thing in the morning. Hope things clear up soon and you begin to feel easier.

I dont have a problem with phlegm as I take Mycodyne tablets which thins it out and I dont have a cough.I dont have any pain either .the humidifier with olbas oil helps clear a stuffy nose so helps breathing.x Sheila.

I've bought a couple from Amazon. Both small plug in units with a colour changing light. Both have a timer from 30 minutes to 2 hours or continuous use. One I can select the colour I want and use it as a night light. I've never had a spillage from either and use them regularly. Have had them a few years now. Both were under £20.

Mine was a good buy also from Amazon£14.99

I have seen the same on other sites over £30. They are a bargain.

I'm tempted but it might end up as a gadget at the back of the cupboard. Now, when I feel I can't breathe I open the bedroom window and use ventolin

I was told by my Consultant ,never open bedroom window at night only during the daytime. The night air can cause chest infections .

I'll check with my doctor to see how he feels about night air. Thanks.

Hi there Chrys, I use a dehumidifier rather than a humidifier as I found that my problem was too much moisture in the air rather than not enough and it has been a life saver. I have the PureMate PM412 and it extracts up to 12 litres of moisture per day which is just brilliant. It's on offer at the moment (down from £179.00 to £119.99 with free p&p) so I have included a link for you to take a look at it. Good luck from Eric 👍 puremate.co.uk/puremate-pm-...

Hi, That information is so useful and I hadn't thought of getting one of those rather than a basic humidifier. I will speak to my doctor on Tuesday and ask his advice. Thank you and I am going to mention this to my aunt who might benefit from one as she has asthma. Speak soon, Chrys

Hello Neville, The information you have provided in your post was something I didn't expect to hear. It is so helpful that people like yourself have taken the trouble to post such useful information. It is now very obvious that I must get specialist advice before purchasing anything. Thank you again. Chrys
