A friend with breathing issues bought the Dyson air purifier a few months ago. She said that yes, it's expensive but absolutely amazing and is very pleased. That's the one I'd get if I needed to. P

That’s the one I would chose too . My concern is the running cost....my electricity bill is enormous as it is. 😫😕

I could not do without my air filter. I live in an

apartment block and the perfumes, cigarette smoke and cooking smells come into the apartment. It makes life much easier for me. I have an Innova brand it is made in Germany. I live in Oz. But as others have said, check out the internet. Best wishes.

Hi I’ve only a few months been diagnosed with copd and although i used to smoke i don’t anymore, like you i worked in the building trade, labouring to 2 brickes for a number of years but prior to that gutting buildings/houses that had asbestos for fire protection that you’ll be aware of,back then,I’m talking late 70s early 80s there was no health & safety like there is now so it was up to you to wear hard hats/dust masks or any protective clothing to protect yourself, when gutting houses completely you had all the old plaster dust which was bad enough but it was the black dust under floorboards and ceilings that i found was the worst but at least you could see that, ripping out asbestos sheets didn’t give out the same dust as house dust so you didn’t really think much of it,and to be honest, back then the dust mask were only flimsy things you wore that by today’s standards wouldn’t get passed nowhere near today’s health & safety standards, hard hats were introduced on our site in around 1983,different colours for different trades,so all these years before health & safety more or less was non-existent,nobody really complained as good bonuses were paid for what we termed “ muck money” and unions in the building and civil engineering trade were more or less non-existent,joining a union was frowned upon by firm management so nobody bothered, even holiday pay stamps were unique only to this industry, ive now been left thinking that because of their being no health & safety in this industry like there is nowadays,by working around this type of dust and asbestos, unprotected and nobody being able to enforce any kind of protection in these conditions back then, the asbestos and dust has probably done more damage to my lungs than smoking has,i wasn’t what you’d call a heavy smoker and never smoked more than 10 in each day,I know smoking hasn’t helped, not by any means, but looking back to then and what we now know about exposure to asbestos and certain types of dust and how many years i was unprotected and exposed to them both,I’m of the opinion that asbestos and dust has done the biggest part of damage to my lungs more than smoking fags has done,it would interesting to hear your views regarding my comments,we both worked in the same industry so you’ll be aware that during the early years you worked in this industry there was naff all in the terms of protection from asbestos or dust,be it house dust, plaster dust, cement dust etc,on the subject of air purifiers ive not yet tried any as i don’t know which ones to use but would be grateful for any recommended devices to help with my breathing if anyone is willing to suggest any to try...fenty.

Hi Fenty great to hear (I suppose) someone who has gone through similar things as me and has the exact feelings as me and I'm an x smoker 2 sorry I'm just off for another CT scan today yes on Sunday .I would be happy to correspond with you to swap notes will get back to you soon my friend 😄

fenty in reply to ProudYorky

I’d be more than happy to correspond with you, like me you worked through an era where we just weren’t protected enough and we’re now suffering the consequences, don’t get me wrong i loved the work and the friends in our gang,it became a pleasure to go to work each day and we socialised as friends out of work, but looking back we were really quite expendable even though we were regarded as good reliable workers,i can remember gangs being able to pack up a job to go somewhere else for a little bit extra money and then a week or so later they’d be back saying they’d enjoyed it more back here,it’s unheard of now to do that, gone are the days of being on the books and getting a regular wage, everyone now has to have their subbys ticket, and to have to sort your own tax every year, nobody batted an eyelid working round asbestos, nobody ever said how dangerous it was and how it would affect us down the line years later regarding our lungs,so long as we got our wages and bonus was all we worked for,I’m glad though that there’s health and safety eventually to protect the lads nowadays doing what we did as at the end of the day i wouldn’t wish on anybody that they get any form of lung disease, like you I’m going through investigations and have to have another scan to see if these growths/nodules are growing and at what rate and hopefully to rule out anything sinister,i sincerely hope everything is positive for you,and I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for you,it’s great to be able to talk to someone who’s been in the trade like myself,I still keep in touch with what’s left of my old workmates, unfortunately half of them are no longer with us but they’re always with us in our conversations and our hearts and minds, the thing is we still talk about work back then as though we’re still there,it’s still that fresh to us and still laugh about things that we did on site larking about while getting the jobs done, anyway I’ll not rant on,good luck with your scans and i sincerely hope your results are positive, look forward to hearing from you again...fenty.

Morning fenty Im finding all this with hospital a right pain and very confusing .I read your previous posts and I can relate to everything you say.I started work in 71 age 15 as a bound apprentice painter and decorator working for a large well run local building firm here in yorkshire. They built council houses private houses worked on factories, schools, hospitals churches, office blocks ,factories plus domestic work, you name it we did it .Obviously at 15 I was dogs body doing all the jobs nobody else wanted to do ( it was the way in them days it taught you respect and what work was about didn't it) my first job I worked on was a large brand new built old oaps centre with 80 flats plus communist halls ECT. My job all week for the first few months was sweeping up every flat and passage way after joiners, plasterer electricians ect had made there mess before our team of 10 painters could start .Every floor was newly laid concrete so you know the dust clouds I was breathing in no mask just a scarf tied round my mouth as you say health safety none existent Once I progressed I was then rubbing down with sandpaper all the woodwork( with other apprentices) that had been filled with synthetic filler, clouds of white dust went home like a snow man plus rubbing down asbestos gutters soffits ECT When work was slow around winter time we were labouring such as you pulling ceilings down swallowing that black dust ECT hacking plaster off everything evolved round swallowing dust working even had to lay loft insulation and you could see the fibers floating in the air hit sticky conditions then working in cellars in cold sometimes damp condition breathing in his knows whatThen on top of all that working in spray painting doing cafes laundrettes ECT all the thinners breathing in .No wonder at 63 Im in the state In same as you .

I am finding it so confusing at the moment and hard work everything is coming once like an avalanche .I was assessed by PIP in November and they awarded me low rate care told them I was not accepting that and now waiting for my appeal date in the mean time they phoned me and offered me low rate mobility told them no still going to court I also am riddled with arthritis had a complete new knee in 2004 and thyroid disease plus graves disease so I'm knackered lol plus kidney disease all I believe through building trade .On top of all this just to add to the stress I went for a work assessment for ESA waited 8 week for results and just been awarded full support group ESA .I

All this with the hospital I don't understand the initial report from my consultant he says I have intersitual lung disease through building trade with dust and asbestos lungs are heavily scarred but I have been giving nothing to help from the hospital I have just been yesterday for another ct scan don't get seen again till Sept, My Dr says it's a form of COP but I don't know!!! But I don't let things get to me but I do think the DHSS make me feel like a begger with a bowl .Sorry if I've moaned on I'm still very upbeat about life and can cope with anything thrown at me but very angry at the system, I feel for people not as strong willed and determined as me not to be brow beaten anyway hope not put you off chatting hope your ok today...

It’s the way we all start in building and civil engineering, your ahead of me by 4 or 5 years as i left school in 1977 but it was the same in that I started at j.e.b Wheatley, local building contractors and i was 16 just general labouring like you just the guffer, but a couple of ground workers took me under their wing and learnt me how to lay pipes, concrete and screeded floors and paid me a little bonus and gave me incentive to watch and learn, after a couple of years toing and froing between different firms I’d learnt enough for me to be teamed up with a chap and still good friend Brian and became a ground worker laying concrete, pipes, paving etc and started earning a good wage with good bonus,if it was raining we’d do the job and hit then go home early,we got moved to the small works department doing jobs in government buildings around East Midlands that we’re chock a block with asbestos linings that we had to rip out, walls ceilings mainly, back then we didn’t have a clue as to what we were breathing in everyday and nobody ever said to wear protection, like you said just wrap your scarf round to keep dust out,I ended up working with two brickies labouring to them as Brian went up north to work with a civil engineering firm working nights and lodging out doing the sewers in Manchester,i stayed with Kev and Steve labouring for them and did lots of mods, new builds etc for local councils and housing associations where we tore down loads of prefabs that were top to bottom asbestos, worked in d factories that were lined with the stuff so you’d got asbestos, dust in all it’s forms except for pit dust, the dust masks they gave you back then we’re basic to say the least and you ended up taking them off as they were so uncomfortable so you just didn’t bother, health and safety just didn’t exist at all,it was just same for the other trades having to breath in all these forms of dust with no proper protection, now years on we’re paying the price for this with lung disease, skin problems, joint problems by kneeling down in cold damp conditions yet there’s no help or compensation for anyone who worked like this back then, some of my school pals went down the mines,a few have dust related diseases and ended up getting some form of compensation because of pit dust,i never thought this fair on all the men in our industry that we never got anything in the way of help like the miners did,a lot of us have lung disease like the miners got but we got nothing, ive actually had a good respiratory team both at my g.p surgery and respiratory clinic who’ve really done a great job, keeping me informed all the way through the copd testing process,I’ve got moderate to severe emphysema I’ve just had a pet scan that’s shown these nodules have grown but in their opinion aren’t sinister which was a great relief but they need monitoring,I’ve just this morning had my pneumonia vaccine,on Thursday I’ve got to have some breathing test done at my g.p surgery then I’m put down to start a pulmonary rehabilitation course,I’m not sure what’s what on these courses but I’ve had it on good advice that it’s beneficial so I’m up for trying this,i was due to start a pain manage programme this week at my local pain clinic, but got a call Friday from them to inform me that they’d spoke to my respiratory consultant regarding this programme and he’d advised against me doing this as it is his opinion that I’m not well enough to do this,so that’s the end of that,i was looking forward to doing that so i was disappointed not to be able to do it,but as my wife said my respiratory consultant wouldn’t say you’re not well enough to do it if he didn’t mean it,don’t get me started on the dwp pip,I’m just going through an appeal thing with them, they’ve contradicted themselves through the whole thing and I’m determined to go all the way even if it means a tribunal,I’m now getting good help and advice with this so it’s just wait and see what happens now,I’m just about to go and sit in our community room downstairs as my wife’s decorating(glossing) and she doesn’t want the paint fumes getting into my lungs and irritating them,so out i go until she’s done and given the gloss fumes time to disperse and air out our living room.hope to speak to you again soon,it’s good to talk to someone who was in the same trade as myself..fenty.

Sorry I rushed out, apologies for seeming rude and ignorant,i didn’t mean to appear so,when you mentioned going for your esa medical assessment,i had one around 18 months ago at our local assessment centre in Mansfield, the lady who saw me was lovely which surprised me as I’d heard they were ogresses and very rude,at that time i was taking antibiotics for another chest infection and according to my wife i really looked poorly she had actually suggested she ringvand cancel for hopefully another appointment at a later date, but i said no and attended the medical assessment, what surprised me was how sympathetic she was,she actually said that i shouldn’t have attended,to go home, rest and get better and not to worry about the decision of the medical assessment, and around a week later we got the decision in our favour, now why can’t the pip assessors be polite like this instead of making the pip assessments interrogations,it doesn’t hurt to be polite at all,if it weren’t for people like us who suffer with ill health in whatever forms, they’d be out of work having to sign on as unemployed, like you I’m going all the way with this and it’s as much,if not more to challenge her on the contradictive comments and lies she’s put down during my assessment, your comment about the dwp making you feel like a beggar with a bowl is in fact how they leave you feeling now who devises how these assessments should be conducted,as I feel capita and the dwp are both in cahoots with each other as to be as negative to us where and whenever possible, there are too many negative comments about how people have been treated during their assessments for it to be anything other than, when we’ve got diagnosis of our illnesses from doctors, consultants etc, just what gives these people the authority to overrule and not take into account what’s obviously evident to them and then make their own observations that are completely opposite to what our medical evidence is telling them, how in 40 minutes or so can these assessors make justified decisions on how ill we are or not, then get away with doing so is beyond me,it’s like someone said,if you know the system then you’ll breeze through these assessments, that’s all well and good but the majority of us don’t know the system and we end up losing out to the shirkers who abuse getting disability benefits,we don’t ask for our illnesses,we get them and have no choice in the matter,we all get good and bad days but it seems as though to get pip the dwp and capita seem to think we need to have bad days every day and not to be able to enjoy anything i.e reading, writing, communicating, watching tv,listening to music that if we can do these things, then we cant be ill if we can do these things,i just wonder how many genuinely ill people have been treated like this as it seems the dwp and capita seem intent of failing where and whenever possible regardless of the distress it may cause to people who are already distressed daily due to illness, anyway rant over at dwp and capita,I just wonder how many buildings still have asbestos that’s undetected, talking of insulation that’s one thing i didn’t like having to handle at all when gutting buildings,it made you itch and feel dirty for days on end, even when wearing rubber gloves,it was just as bad travelling to work in works vans, overloaded with tools, bags of sand and cement and what have you, health and safety would have had a field day back then and we’d have never gotten out of the yard and onto our jobs, how things have changed,I’m not sure it would be as enjoyable back then if we’d had all this red tape to contend with just to get to work and get the job done, even the gaffers back then didn’t mind cutting a few small corners so we could get home on time, the good old days could be good old days when you look back in hindsight at what we got achieved back then without all this latest technology they use nowadays...fenty.

Hi Fenty didn't think you were being rude to be honest never noticed we can't be on here 24/7 I am astounded how we both think and have experienced the same .I too felt the ESA assessor who was a mature x nurse was so kind and she did reasure me I would be ok because I felt so ill she didn't even examin me,but dhss have taken around 6 to 8 week to let me know the outcome .The pip assessor was a right obnoxious woman around 25/ 26 yr old who didn't listen and was trying to rush me and didn't seem happy I wouldn't hurry .When I got my results I was gobsmacked so I asked for her report sending she didn't write half the things I said and wrote some things I hadn't said I'm fighting it on my own as I prefer it that way stupid I know my wife trys to help but it's difficult when I have managed to sort things out on my own all my life

It made me smile when you mentioned being in vans with all the tools cement ect we used to get in a Bedford with seats ( planks really ) down both sides 7 guys sat down each side and 5 sat on the floor between each other's legs .If we had an accident we would have been killed used to get to work numb.We had four vans that full everyday and some used to ride on the back of tipper wagon in the the summer I tell you what though it was a hard life but I miss it I miss the comaradery and the true friendships built up the laughter day in day out surprising how many have passed away.We used to go out every Friday night in the 70s 80s 90s with 20 or more of us never missed unless on holiday or ill unfortunately there's only 3 of us still living brings it home to me how lucky I am . Yes even though I did what I did happy days take care mate Richard

It sounds like we both had the same type of pip assessor, why they have to be like that I just don’t know, you know,we’ve both worked hard and got illnesses as we’ve gotten older, you’d think that these pip assessors would respect us for that, and we’re at the time in our life’s where life can be the opposite of what we’d like now we’re older,i don’t know what it’s like where you live, but where i am,i know lads who I went to school with, who’ve never worked and get owt that’s going and keep getting disability benefits, and owt that goes with it,the first time I got laid off due to bad weather i didn’t know you could sign on to get unemployment benefit until you resumed work,so i went around 3 weeks living off my last wages I’d recieved it wasn’t until we were able to start back again that one of the old joiners explained that you could claim a little bit of lay of pay from the job centre/dole as it was then called to tide you over,it wasn’t much but it was better than nothing,my wife knows someone who knows a woman that worked for capita who packed her job in doing assessments for dwp pip as she didn’t like the methods designed to fail as many as they could, she said it was unfair on the genuinely ill people that deserved it but would purposely be turned down,I can well believe this as the assessor who came to do my assessment put in things that we know were fabricated,I’ve made a complaint to capita about her and have told them I’d be prepared to challenge her face to face about the made up things she’s put down,I’ve not heard anything from them yet but on the same day i made the complaint i rang pip to inform them that i had done so who informed me that it would be noted down but couldn’t be considered until the decision about my pip claim had been made,i think that was a load of tripe from pip and I’m of the opinion they’re as bad as capita in fobbing us off with a load of tripe,I often wish i could go back and have a day with all the old gang sadly as with you over half are no longer with us and i still miss them now as much as when they first passed away but the memories are golden and i wouldn’t have missed it for anything,it’s funny how you bond with people that at first are mostly strangers to you,but friendships form and you become so comfortable and i think that makes going to work enjoyable,we used to always rib each other but always in fondness, anyway take care and look forward to speaking to you again when you feel like doing so...fenty.

Hi Fenty I don't think they care what we've done in the past the government has made it look through propergander that anyone on benifits is scum and taking money from the workers ,they are given a job it seems to make it as hard for us to claim as possible. They must hope that many will fall by the wayside and not bother challenging there decision. I admit some do put it on but it can't be hard to weedle them out and so they should .It's the constant bombarding of really ill and disabled people that's so shocking . I like you know people who haven't worked no intention of working on full benifits most of rent paid free dentist free glasses subsidized council tax go in bookies and go on holiday to Spain and have a decent car there attitude to me is well you should know how to claim bennifits to the max thats what there there for why work when can getore from social .These guys get away with it how I will never know glad I was never like that .I remember in 1982 my wife had just had our 2nd child we were going through a slump in the decorating trade got laid off but didn't wait on my arse I did 12 hours a day 7 days a week for next to nowt on security until work picked up . My wife got a part time job even though we were worse when I got back into decorating I worked everywhere and anywhere as many hours as I could so we had something to fall back on when times got hard I was proud to be a worker contributing it was the norm in my family you worked for your money or you went without .I said to the PIP assessor don't you think if I could go to work I would why would anyone put themselves through the belittling and disgusting process of an assessment and beg for a pitence (with to be honest a very young woman who's only worry she told me was her and her boyfriend buying a flat at today's prices and how lucky we are to own our own home )When I could earn as much in a day as what I'm trying to claim from you in a week .The thing is we can't prove what they or we said in the interview and chance of you having a face to face with your assessor to resolve it are nil as they look after there own but good luck on your challenge ,you end up with enough paper work to wallpaper your front room .

God I could rant on lol .At least me and you have the ability and drive to fight the dhss for our rights . I'll finish on a lighter note as I'm turning into Victor meldrew ,you were on about work mates I look back on my career and liken it to Aufvedesien pet such wonderful memories ,I never got up on a morning not looking forward to going to work no matter what I was doing I even look back to the apprentice days when I was dogs body with a smile . I've lost some truly great friends over the years even though I'm a typical wide 6ft builder I sometimes shed a tear or too of sorrow but mainly laughter ....those were the good old days .....take care...

That’s the thing though,we’ve both worked and paid taxes and national insurance contributions for years, yet still we’re made to feel that by getting these illnesses as we’ve aged and by trying to claim sickness or disability benefit that were scroungers, that I think comes with honesty and contributing towards looking after our family’s,I wonder if any of these people who know and abuse the system that know how to milk it,ever feel guilty that they’re able to get what hard working, honest people can’t and don’t get,I think probably not, like you said, regardless of how long we’ve worked and paid in our contributions, once we get to having to make an application for whatever type of benefit we then get looked down on as another somebody out to get something for nowt,we’ve probably and highly likely paid more in taxes and insurance contributions in just our first few years of earning than we’d ever get on any benefits so just think how many people over our years of paying in this has paid their benefits for them, the people who know the system inside out and abuse it and ruin it for the genuine people really don’t care at all what people think of them, you can see this where I live,no conscience whatsoever,i couldn’t live like that knowing i hadn’t worked to provide for what me and my family have id be embarrassed at what people thought of how I’d have had everything for nothing, like lots of other working people we’ve struggled but got through and have enjoyed good times, now our kids are older and have moved out and have their own places we’re now comfortable as this our own time, our savings are for ourselves even though we still help our kids out when necessary, but knowing we’ve strived to give our kids as much as we could and we’ve done the best we can is all that mattered to us,i had a young chap from Severn Trent water come to ours to do a water efficiency test,British gas organised this as I’m on their priority customer list,we have only electricity from them as i have to keep medicines refrigerated, anyway this young chap came, did his thing then asked did we need any help with benefits, pensions, money management as British Gas/Severn Trent work together on these things and have dedicated teams to help with any of the above,my wife mentioned about being not awarded pip and asking them to reconsider their decision and he said they have an organisation who may be able to help,he put our names forward and they rang me,they’re called Auriga and are something to do with Severn Trent water and British Gas,they do help with any aspects of dwp benefits including pip and have offered to help me regarding the reconsideration, the lady who rang me spoke to me at length and in detail and she actually used to work for the dwp until around 18 months ago so is very knowledgable as to how the dwp work regarding all of their benefits, she’s sending me a letter with all she needs regarding my pip claim and instructions as to what she needs me to do,she told me she’s done 4 tribunals this year with 2 more in the next few weeks, the 4 tribunals she attended with were all successful and the people got their awards and we’re backdated in payment as well,so I’m going to take a chance and get on board with her,and hopefully get a good result as based on what I’ve told her and the evidence of my illnesses she thinks there’s more than a good chance of getting the dwp to reconsider and award me pip,I don’t have to travel anywhere to do this as she’ll visit and help me and my wife at our home for no cost at all as British Gas and Severn Trent water cover all costs and expenses for Auriga,to be honest i didn’t know anything at all about Auriga and what they did,it’s given us that extra bit of support and hope that we need for someone to work with us on this to hopefully get dwp pip to get them to reconsider their decision and to get them to award me pip,she did ask though if i was prepared if need be,to go to the appeal tribunal if it goes that far,and i told her yes that I would,i think the thing the dwp pip should do though is educate these assessors to be polite and fair and to make sure they don’t fabricate their assessment reports that make it look like there’s absolutely nothing wrong with us at all...fenty.

I have 3 Dysons now. Go for Pure which denotes full filter cover. They are a godsend in this hot weather. The filters are around £50 a throw, whch last around a year on 24/7.There are cheaper filters, (From Hong Kong), which I don't bother with.

Being able to brethe cool, pure fresh air is wonderfull.
