Not again!

Every year I tell myself this will be the last

That I will grow tomatoes, but then it came to pass,

Whilst in the garden centre we saw these little plants

And then I thought I felt a pulling on the right leg of my pants.

Midge my dog was telling me that we should take some home

Cos she just loves tomatoes as much as any bone.

And I remembered that lovely smell in the greenhouse once again

When I was in there pottering just keeping out the rain

So loaded up some growbags and other stuff we'd need

Including canes and other stuff and some tomato feed.

So now they are nearly ready with toms of different kinds

And Midge can go and help herself there's no one here that minds.

Lucky Midge, living with someone who knows her fancies so well! 💕 Our border collie used to fancy the lower raspberries on the canes, lay quite happily in the sun with a couple of ripe ones inside her ☀️

Mmmm..... Yummers. I can smell them from here.

Lovely. Nothing quite like the taste of a warm tomato straight off the vine. No matter how much you pay you just can't get that real flavour. 😕

Daughter in law next door has grown tomatoes, up to the roof of the greenhouse, also keeping me in fresh beetroots and the runner beans are coming along nicely, about six inches long now!

Well done Don, is there anything you can't put to rhyme!

Great rhyme today Don, think we all love home grown tomatoes. Am here in Cardiff for a long weekend with my little family, and the restaurant we went to last night had a tiny cup of tomato water as part of the starter, it was divine, just no taste like homegrown x

Ooh Izb1 a tiny cup of tomato water as part of your starter is a new one for me.( not that I go out much to restaurants anymore, lol). Was it full of taste or just a little too watery? I'm curious to know more about this new starter on a menu.

I think it was a compliment to the starter and being cheeky I did ask how they made it, the girl said it was just chopped tomatoes from the greenhouse and hung up in muslim to filter, it tasted fab but it could have been the type of tomatoes as they had a herby taste which could have been the vine. I will certainly be trying this out x

Yummy,scrummy!!!!!

in reply to Izb1

They must have added something or it would have been bland, even fresh tomato needs at least a pinch of salt. Probably some secret herbs they didn't want to tell you about. 😉

That’s actually an impressive amount of tomato plants, and tomatoes. Now that I’m looking at the photo on my iPad I can see it much better. 😎

Ah! The wonders of technology, you'll be able smell and taste them on the updated version of iPad. 😅

I love the smell of home grown, my grandpa grew them. The Yorkie I looked after had a passion for bananas, would do anything for them, did not like toms.

Mmm reminds me of my grandad’s greenhouse, that lovely smell.

Well done, Don, you really are a man of many talents!

Rhyming fingers and green fingers!

I used to grow tomatoes but that's another thing I've stopped doing. I'm now thinking I should start again. You've inspired me.

As for your tomato eating Midge that's a new one to me. Never heard of a dog eating tomatoes though I once had a Siamese cat who liked cooked garden peas!

Happy gardening

I haven't had dogs for years. Too much of a softie thinking about the rainbow bridge. You have reminded me though of my fabulous cat. He once tried to climb into the oven with a roasting chicken. There I am, both hands full with a tray full of roasties and trying to dissuade the cat with my foot! Spuds went everywhere, I had to really pull him out! Happy days

Our first small tomatoes are just becoming ripe. Delicious.

I am not doing so well with toms this year. I just love the smell of the leaves though. Doesn't seem to bring the wheezing on.

They look lovely. Mine are pretty sad in comparison. Perhaps I over fuss. Have had bumper strawberries this year and raspberries too so well compensated.

in reply to stamford1234

I thinks it has been a good year for strawberries, my nephew's are the same a real bumper crop. My small orange tomatoes have done really well keeping us supplied for over a week now, but the bigger ones just will not ripen.

That's good news, some hope for mine then. I have put some netting over the toms. We have sparrows and pigeons nesting close by. I have a feeling they are helping themselves to the tiny toms! Have a lovelt Summer, makes it all worth it doesn't it
