Protein Powder Supplements Now a Concern

Just read in this a.m. newspaper in column by Dr. Oz & his colleague that protein powder supplements (except for totally plant-based) are dangerous. After the scary news that all sugar (even in fresh fruit) & carbohydrates causes proliferation of cancer cells, the egg-white protein powder I add to my yogurt-kefir & fruit cereal breakfast is under attack. Diagnosed Stage 1 adenocarcinoma & just post right lung middle lobectomy & with 2-3 other nodules being watched, I'm at the point of not knowing what, how to eat. And my BMI is too low & I'm trying to gain a few pounds. Whatever can I do?

That's interesting. I had just thrown away a huge container of massive bulk protein powder away. Really because I was sick of it. Like you I cannot put on weight and it drops off if I have as much as a sleepless night. I wish that one of these clever celebrity doctors who keep devising diets to lose weight would come up with something intrresting to help us.

The protein powder I'm using isn't really for building massive muscle -- at least I don't think so -- & if so, it's not helping in that regard. Whatever bit of muscle I had built up prior to my illness & surgery is gone now.

I'm just on the verge of despair over what I can eat -- I still have to eat, don't I? We all do. I'll have to read one of the books that's been recommended & possibly talk to one of the nurses on my onc team. Just letting off some steam, I guess.

Thanks for responding.

I have just written to Michael Moseley’s agent asking that instead of producing yet another weight loss programme, he concentrates his mind on our problem and comes up with something to put on and maintain weight. So if any members are reading this maybe they would like to get in touch with him through his agent.

Good idea, I have tried all sorts of things to put on weight , but no joy .

One consultant says it's because COPD uses up a lot of energy just to breathe.

I have tried protein powder, still have one pack left.

Yes, with bronch we are constantly fighting infection, even when we don’t have an exacerbation. My consultant said that my immune system is always going like a steam train but I can’t take on enough coal.

Actually, today when I weighed myself I'd gained a bit -- and for the past several days I'd been holding steady. So maybe I've turned the corner with the post-surgery weight loss & am now on the road to stabilizing my weight. Once I return to some exercise, I may regain at least some muscle tone as well. That should help me not feel so skinny & fragile.

Lot of body builders sufferd lot of cancers.

They say a suger fast THEN re started causes body to burn toxins from body

Clearly I should look into that.

I live on protein powder every lunch time , this is such a shame, will have to find plant based one, I tried a pea protein but it was awful. In body builders it could be something different causing this.

Hi. Sorry to hear you are struggling to get weight on. The dietician suggested that I add powdered milk to everything. That worked for me.

Can’t advise re protein powder but 2 years ago was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma breast cancer. It is known to be rare and slow growing and does not spread fast . I have been fine since the op with no further treatments. I started to eat more protein and a more varied diet and have been able to gain some weight. Wish you well with your treatment.

Ask to see a registered dietitian. They use evidence based practice to help clients achieve better health and weight outcomes through diet. All the best, M.

This would be why we use Natural supplements.

Hi and not so long ago I was like you and found it almost impossible to gain weight. ..... If i.looked at a bar of chocolate I would loose weight ! Then having to take more prescribed meds and needing 24\7 oxygen @3lts, I've now gone the complete opposite! I've even got that horrendous spare tyre!! I've gone off the point a bit because I wanted to say it saddened me when I was under 6 stone that there was limited help to put weight on yet so many options are available to loose weight. Just unfair.

Hi Hun I am exactly the same as you. Thin all my life. I look back on Photos and remember I was eating lots of Bananas to Fill out the Skinny Frame before me. I was still Thin only 4 years ago, Then The Dreaded Meds (Steroids) started to make me eat more ? It all happened so fast, from 45/48 kilos or less to now 65 Kilos and Dieting & Exercising with my Oxygen at 3 ltrs. So is it the Oxygen?, is it the Meds?, or maybe getting Older, This one I don't want to accept. I used to moan at People Dieting when I couldn't put weight on. Sorry everyone for that thought. I would love to have some Muscle, even though I try with weights, not happening. Oh well. I eat healthily and exercise, not more to do except have a Good Happy Life, A Vino or two. A wish for all of You Dear HU Friends. xxxx

I was similar. You need protein so I have every other day, 2 large soft boiled eggs with my dipping soldiers. And a round of toast spread thick with Advacado. Next morning I will have Bacon and egg on toast sandwich

Don't listen to all this unhealthy shit, just eat it. And go for a walk every morning. I am 77 COPD, EMPHASIMA, TRIPLE BYPASS 28!yrs ago had heart attack 6 months ago 3 stents put in. And have heavy sex 5 times a week, IN MY DREAMS. LOL.

Thanks very much to all of you who kindly responded to my concern about continuing to use egg white protein powder every morning in my kefir based fruit & oat cereal. I seem to have stopped losing weight & have held steady for an entire week. Indeed, I do feel that I've turned a corner & will continue to gain until I'm comfortable & my BMI is normal. That shouldn't take long. By then I'll also be working on toning muscle (right now even though I'm thin, my upper arms, thighs, etc., are very flabby. It's gonna be all right as long as I don't have to have more surgery anytime soon. In the meantime, I plan to eat everything in moderation. I'm not going to dwell on everything I read / come across, until my medical experts tell me something or other is important; e.g., I won't start smoking again after over 20 years I quit & am now living with the consequences of never having smoked at all!
