Hi primrose123 . 👋

I'm sorry to hear about your sister's condition. It must be a worrying time for her and you. A pneumothorax usually occurs when air escapes from the lung causing air to fill the space between the lung and chest wall, putting pressure on the lung. Is this her first experience of lung issues? Does she have asthma or did she smoke? As for coughing I think the doctors will have to investigate thoroughly to understand why she has a chronic cough. If she's had an infection , it could be remnants of that. But they are doing the right thing with further investigation / CT scan. Sometimes it's not so cut and dried when making a diagnosis and it takes time. Ask questions. Bring an arm full of you must. I hope things improve for her very soon.

Take good care. 😊

Thank you Caspiana for your kind reply, this is my sister's first issue of lung disease & no she does not smoke, the cough comes & goes & when it does come it appears to be deep in her chest, she has had a blood test which was last week & received a phone call to-day to go on Thursday for a CT scan, I will keep you posted as to how she gets on Cas whenever she gets the result of the scan... I hope all good & well with you, Love & God bless you always...Primrose123 xx

Primrose, normally an obvious pneumothorax(lung collapse) is observable via a simple chest x-ray and and is often accompanied by a sharp chest pain on intake of breath.

Caspiana has given you an excellent definition as to why they happen and they are normally easily treatable with a chest drain to remove any fluid build up,often if they are only small they clear up without any treatment and simple bed rest.

The Ct scan will clearly indicate if your sister has a collapse and also be invaluable in diagnosing any current lung issues so rest assured she will be in the best possible hands for her future care.

Best wishes Ski's and Scruff's x
