Hi

Interesting question rather than stupid. It would depend on further exposure emphysema or number of deliberating infections Bronchitis.

To further muddle the waters you can have a element of both.

I am Emphysema very slight bronchi, little mucus very rare I get infection, last one 2014 that was more viral than bacterial.

Hi

Emphysema is damage to the Aveoli due to exposure to tobacco smoke, toxic smoke or fumes. Continued or further exposure can increase the damage to the Aveoli. increasing the progression of the disease.

Thank you so how do I avoid further damage sorry

I have very little mucus too. But I do get a bit of a build up from traffic fumes or cleaning sprays. I do breathing exercises, 3 or 4 in through the nose and double that huffing out through the mouth. I try to do 10 mins a day. Good luck

If you smoke, or are exposed through work to lung irritants, fumes, harsh chemicals or lots of traffic pollution you could continue to deteriorate more quickly. I'm not sure but blf respiratory nurses could give advice about this. I have emphysema. I don't smoke, avoid spray house cleaning chemicals, strong perfume etc. Anything that seems to irritate my airways. Hopefully people with more knowledge will respond.

I don't smoke stopped on diagnosis. I will avoid the things you suggest.

I think that most of us can say that they were frightened on diagnosis. You are not alone with that. In time you will get used to it and learn how to manage it and to realise it does not mean a death sentence. Life will still be worth living, if it wasn't I can assure you I would not still be working.

It is so worrying to be diagnosed with a chronic illness. Everyone is anxious at first. Keep trying to learn as much as possible to help yourself. Take time to come to terms with it. Keep asking folk on this site for their info. Look after yourself. Take care of yourself. Hope this horrible worrying time will ease soon

If you have just quit smoking recently, it might be helpful to also join the Quit Support community on Health Unlocked. Nice group there who will give good advice. From what I have read there, a number of people report being anxious and depressed as a side effect from quitting.

in reply to pepapod

No quitting smoking isn't a problem. But thank you

No such thing as a stupid question on here. The funny thing is I can't answer your question. I am sure one of the members can offer some guidance. x

Stamford is right, there are no stupid questions here. I can't help much as I don't have copd but it's all a huge learning curve and collecting all the knowledge you can will really help you now and in the future.

Fantastic that you've given up smoking, now you need to avoid smoke, fumes, chemicals (like strong cleaning stuff), avoid infections (people/children with coughs n colds), get yourself some antiseptic handgel to carry around, healthy weight/diet, whatever exercise you can manage. I walk a lot, away from roads because it's free & I have a dog!

There's lots of advice & help here so don't hesitate to ask anything you want to. Good luck, P
