Flying with supplemental oxygen

Hi all, I had my test for flying today and was told that I would now need oxygen if flying again, I normally fly Ryanair so I was wondering if any of you have travelled using 02 and was it very costly

I think its anywhere from 50quid to 100 depending on flight duration ,some airlines put a time limit on supplying 02

Hi Hun ,I fly with oxygen, just come back from Spain ,with Ryanair , it doesn't cost anything, if you have your own small concentrator? You can't take cylinders aboard , or you can buy oxygen off the airline I believe it isn't cheep!!! You will have to apply for special assistance when you book, and will need a fit to fly off your Dr , airline will send you one and Dr fill it in , I do find travel insurance very expensive !!! Where can you get a concentrater from ? My partner is planning a flight to NZ a lot of time in the air

You can look online, there are several companies who you can buy from or hire.

Find out about the insurance because the insurance could cost more than the flight to NZ.

I bought my own off a company called intermedical , is your partner on oxygen normally ??? If so ask her oxygen company if they can help , but you must have enough battery power to last ,not sure how long flight is to NZ ?? And my insurance for two month in Spain was just under £800 not cheap !! Some quoted me £1300 !! Good luck xx

Thank you hope your having a good day my mate is not on oxygen at the mo does that mean he may not need to worry when flying......he seems to think I am making a big deal out of it geez I just want him to get there in one piece grrr bloody stubborn arse lol ???

Why do you think he might need oxygen to fly ??? Does he have low oxygen levels ?? His Dr or specialist are the best ones to ask Hun xxxx

Thanks for replying Caz, I only got the results yesterday that I need oxygen to fly so it hit me hard, I don’t have anything booked yet but I just want to know the ropes, I am not on oxygen so I think I would have to rent one from the airline

Thompson don’t charge on there flights or they didn’t up to 2 yrs ago for oxygen saves messing with your own & saves £100 each way like others charge

Thanks for that information broadband, I am not on oxygen so I would have to rent some from Ryanair, I have nothing booked yet as I am still coming to terms with the news, I also would feel very self conscious wearing oxygen on a plane.

Hi, I'm also new to this community. I too need oxygen for the flights and at my destination for over night. Airlines allow portable oxygen concentrator (poc) if you bring your own. I've struggled to find any support in this . It's been a night mare. Outside the UK you have to arrange your own oxygen for flights and during your vacation if needed. Even so if you hire poc for flights you will be responsible for the machine for the duration of your holiday. Very few airlines offer oxygen, if they do is Ryan air they only allow one per flight, so you'd have to book early. Good luck as I'm still searching, currently contemplating purchasing a poc cheaper than hiring.. I've been quoted £550 for 10 night holiday, for flight and destination. One trip , if I wanted another holiday I'd pay again same if not more.

My goodness, £550 is a lot to pay, does it include the return flight? I have not used any poc so it will be all new to me, would it be allowable for me to buy one outright? Thanks for replying Porschea

Hi, I only know because I too am looking into this at the minute, not been abroad for 14 years, so lots have changed since then. Airlines nearly all provided oxygen at a cost, 14 years ago. Now they don't allow oxygen cylinders on board, but allow you to bring your own poc, with adequate batteries, depending on your flight time too as to how many battery change's you'd have to do too, your responsibility, also you're best to get in touch with airline for special assistance, regarding paperwork regarding drs fit to fly ect.

Hiring a poc, you have responsibility of it for duration of your holiday, even if it's just for the flights. Yes I've been given a quote of £550 for 10 or 11 nights hire of the machine. Ryan air do supply oxygen during flights, but one customer per flight so if you're lucky to be able to book this good luck. I'm considering buying one, as if I am able to holiday next year too I'll already have one, as £550 on top of holiday costs is a bit too much.

I went to Jamaica with TUI last year and the airline supplied four cylinder for outbound and four for inbound journeys free of charge. I still needed to use my own oxygen concentrator to get on the plane because I use the oxygen for walking and most things 6 litres per minute.

Hi yes I believe long haul flights to supply oxygen, unfortunately from UK to Europe doesn't seem to be available to these destination

Hi for the last two years I have booked flights with Tui and it has been free for the flight although they only allow 1 person per flight. If you are travelling further abroad there are airlines that provide oxygen free for the flight please check.

That’s good to know Dave, do you or any of you on here feel self conscious using oxygen on a plane, I feel that I will be advertising I used to smoke, that people will think it serves me right! Thanks for the reply
