I can’t tell as I gave up smoking when dx’d but I dread to think what I would have been like if I hadn’t stopped. According to spiro I’m stage 1 with mod to severe characteristics on CT. I just wish I’d never started tbh.

in reply to powderpuff

Thank you so did I just wondering if it can stabilise from quit smoking. So you are what sorry? Bit confused. Mild, on spir but moderate to severe on ct. We all would if could turn back time and understanding never have smoked but it's not all down to smoking is it really

hypercat54 profile image
hypercat54 in reply to

No but it is a big contributing factor. I must admit I was mild for 10 years despite still smoking, then I stopped for 17 months and stayed mild. Now however I have stupidly gone back to it and my last FEV1 was around 15 points less and I am now moderate.

I am going to try to kick the habit again and hopefully it will return to mild. x

in reply to hypercat54

You can do it. You encouraged me to stay off the fags.

in reply to hypercat54

Hi is it possible to go back to mild. Sorry for what may be a stupid question

hypercat54 profile image
hypercat54 in reply to

I don't know but I intend to find out! If the fags aren't taking so much of my oxygen I might be able to use what I have more effectively.

It's great to see I helped you to stop - thank you for that. I mustn't let you down which is another reason for me to stop again sharpish...xx

in reply to hypercat54

You can do it

My Lung function increased after I gave up smoking. It's not reversible but it's controllable. Please give up smoking. 9yrs on so pleased I gave up..

Don’t beat yourself up hyper at! It’s the most difficult of habits to break but you will get there eventually. I’ve been stopped 6 months now but I’m well aware it might not take much for me to start again if I drop my guard.

hypercat54 in reply to powderpuff

Thanks powderpuff. I am not really beating myself up but just so annoyed that after all I went through I went back to it! What did me in was I couldn't break the final link between pubs, darts, alcohol and smoking. I am still thinking of ways to do this. x

Hi hyper, that was the problem for me because nicotine & alcohol just went together most of my life, loved a fag with a pint.

best wishes

I used the little white inhalator even when I had been stopped for months and would still go out with my smoking friends with it. I thought this might help and it did a bit but not enough. :( x

Hi Bev

I use to use them at one time but when i started vaping i hated it especiially when having a beer

(god i sound like alcoholic lol) but i kept using a vap trying different ones until i found one the suited me and i am now use to them.

The only problem is i am now hooked on my vap and still crave for a fag now and again but i still think and have been told it is still better then smoking.

good luck because i Know what you are going though

Thank you music that is a comfort. I agree that vaping is better than smoking. x

Both tests don’t tally or fully correspond with symptoms but given the variables that can affect spiro results that’s probably not surprising either.

I was diagnosed 9 yrs ago with Severe COPD. I gave up smoking immediately. Now I am still the same .Still Severe but able to do the same . Giving up smoking is the answer. I am now 74, at present attending a PR Course and feeling good. I have learned to accept what I CAN do not what I can't .Good Luck.I am doing more than most at my age so I am very fortunate. Positivity is the way forward.

Sorry for not making it clear I went from 51% to 67% and have maintained a figure of around mid 60s since giving up smoking.

in reply to Badbessie

Oh sorry got you

in reply to Badbessie

Did you give up smoking straight away

Badbessie profile image
Badbessie in reply to

I was diagnosed after having bilateral pneumonia and septicemia. I nearly died. It gave me a lot of incentive to stop....lol

in reply to Badbessie

My god how are you now

in reply to garshe

Thank you this is promising

Badbessie profile image
Badbessie in reply to

It was not just giving up smoking, exercise and diet are also important.

in reply to Badbessie

Thank you. I am asking because I see read so many conflicting views about progression and halting I though I would ask real people.

garshe profile image
garshe in reply to

I take supplements like Turmeric,Chlorella and Spirulina. I eat lots of green veg and fruit .have a good diet. Walking is good. I am a young 74yr old lol. Although severe COPD for 9yrs my oxygen is 97 Heart rate 70. All good. Giving up smoking will not cure you but will change the way you deteriorate. We all lose lung function after 27 apparently. Not smoking will mean your lungs will deteriorate at a slower rate .also my lung function increased. Good Luck. X Sheila.

in reply to garshe

Thank you I have test coming up to confirm if I have? Have moderste obstruction. A Dr said if you stop smoking it halts progression so wanted to hear from real people

in reply to garshe

What is lung function improvement does this affect how well.we breath. Sorry all the questions

garshe profile image
garshe in reply to

It's when you get the annual lung function test . Blowing into device. You must have had this to tell you what stage your COPD is. My Lung function went up in a year after stopping smoking. .

in reply to garshe

Oh yes sorry mine was 62 before inhaler 77 after inhaler moderate. Not smoked since hospital admission Dec 1st got lots of test next week

garshe profile image
garshe in reply to

It won't Halt it as every ones lungs deteriorates after 27 apparently. But it will stop it from getting worse and will deteriorate like a normal person who doesn't have COPD. Can increase lung function so really worth it. Great you are not smoking.

in reply to garshe

This is really encouraging. As I needed to hear from people who stopped. Smoking and progressed like normal people. I have done PR and started to eat better but do panic.

garshe profile image
garshe in reply to

Yes I was having Panic Attacks but the Supplements I take seem to have sorted that I was told I had roughly 1-3 yrs when diagnosed if I didn't stop smoking. 9 yrs on and I have if anything improved. I just take everything that little bit slower and then no problems.

in reply to garshe

Thank you how did you slow down find that hard

garshe profile image
garshe in reply to

I used to rush everyrhing and overthink. Would fo a few things at a time. Multi tasking. This caused me to get short of breath then Panic Attack. I now do everything slower. It gets done in the end. I can go upstairs in one whereas before would be on my hands and knees. Now going up no problem don't carry anything heavy as that's bad. I don't over Think and it works. I am so much better and this nak3s me happier. Just got home from my PR class. Going to sign up for continuation of excersises one hour a week with the COPD team.Really proud of my improvement since I started class.

in reply to garshe

Hi garshe, just reading some of the replies to emily61. Ex smoker too. My biggest problem is panic attacks. Doctors want to give me antidepressents but I cant bear to take them (long story) for another time but could use any tips on supplements you take. I take omega 369, carbocysteine, iron 8mg, probiotic capsul, esomeprazole I have the worst mucus ever. And I'm sure I panic breath all the time on ventolin only because I've not got the right inhalor yet and am moderate copd. Flare ups been really bad since January too. Any advice would be good many thanks Maz

I swear by Tumeric. I take it in pineapple juice (which is good for COPD also) one teaspoon a day.I buy from Organic Burst as it is all pure .have to be careful as other elements can get dragged in but these are all Pure. I also take Chlorella which has helped my breathing.my oxygen was 92 now 97. It works for me and my Panic attacks were horrendous. I just feel so confident these days. I am doing a PR course which has helped. Hope you get sorted. Sheila.

in reply to garshe

I did put all this on here about a month ago with photos of products. Explaining how I have benefited .But unfortunately a lady reported me saying I was advertising. 😱 it was taken off. I was trying to help as I had been housebound with anxiety and panic attacks. I swear by these products and if you have Instagram you can follow Organic Burst

( no I am not advertising lol.)my daughter's did all the research and advised me. Please let me know if these help you.I hope they do as really I am a different person. I was living each day thinking of dying. Now I am embracing every second and loving life and living it.

Good Luck. Sheila.

in reply to garshe

Thanks again sheila. To be very honest that's all I think about just now dying a horrendous death instead of trying to live a good life with hubby and family. This depression and oanic attacks are the worst thi g I've ever experienced in many a long time. Need to get everything under control again thanks again for your help. Will keep you posted. Maz

in reply to

Oh Emily please stay positive. I have to push myself every day but my main focus is that I'm not letting it beat me. My thoughts I should have kept to myself and not said them out loud here. Dont want you to feel worse due to me I really am sorry I said anything about my feelings really stupid od me. Maz

in reply to

Maz no please do not apologise honestly feel the same. So helpful to know I am not on my own. Please I feel it is so important to express how we feel. I am living on my blue inhaler and feel I have got worse. I am so glad you expressed yourself. Do not keep your thoughts to your self on here.

Also helps to keep active and eat properly. If your on steroids they make you want to eat . Also not smoking makes you want to eat carbs. I’m a stone overweight. Desperately trying to stay off the sugar it does help x

I smoked for about 2 years after diagnosed as moderate/severe emphysema, and finally quit just over 2 years ago. It is the single most important thing a smoker can do to breathe better. I haven't had a lung function test in the past two years, so I don't know if the numbers have changed. But, I can tell you that for sure my breathing has changed. As a smoker you just get so used to wheezing and congestion, and colds, and any cold or virus probably will end up as pneumonia, that you really can't appreciate how great it feels to actually breathe without wheezing, congestion, coughing, colds etc. etc. So, I don't know if my "numbers" changed, but I now know that I breathe better and chest is clearer than ever, and haven't had a cold in 2 years...If wan't to feel better....Quit!
