Can't breathe

Cadillacsgirl13 profile image

I'm desperate here. The past few days my breathing has been so bad that I can't even walk to the bathroom without feeling like I'll never catch my breath again. Its so scary. I've done duo nebulizer steroid inhalers, 40 mg of prednisone, my rescue inhaler, and now I'm trying for the first time, a vicks steam humidifier. I was in the hospital 2 days ago and it seemed better when I was first released, but I went right back to the way I was when I was admitted within an hour. Anyone else ever had this happen? I'm so scared I'll never breathe right again and I just wanna be able to play with my daughters

Please ring 111 to ask for advice , especially as you have just come out of hospital.

But if you are really struggling , 999. That is if you live in the UK....if you do not, have you another emergency number you can contact.

I have been in a similar situation in the past....and I improved after a longer, decreasing course of steroids, plus antibiotics.

But please ring for advice now.

Hi Cadillacsgirl13 .

I did look at your profile and it seems this is your first post. I am wondering what your lung condition is? Were in hospital due to an infection? Are you on oxygen? At any rate, I think knitter and sassy59 are right, you need to call emergency services.

I'm sorry it's not a good time. I really hope you start to feel better soon. Sending warm wishes,

Cas xx 🌞🌻

911 in the US. Sounds like you shouldn’t mess around, having been hospitalized. Feel better!

So sorry to hear how you are traveling. I would suggest to go back to the hospital if its that bad. It could be an infection has returned.

It sounds like you have an infection that hasn't cleared up. Get some help. Knitter gave you the numbers. Don't let it get worse

Hello,

Look! I was EXACTLY the same, everytime I felt a little anxious, my mind would start to panic! BELIEVE me PLEASE! Your mind is panicking & distorting your situation, your brain will not allow you to die, unless it is actually your time!

I took about 4 visits to the hospital before I realized that I was making things worse by panicking! NOBODY tells you at the time, in case they are wrong, breathing problems are always too priority, & are treated as such.

One of the best ways to see, is, when you are hyperventilating or struggling, notice what the staff are doing, how they react! If they don't go racing around, it is because they know you panicking.

I don't panic anymore! & I haven't been back to hospital since, except, when my oedema got really bad.

So, please! Use a paper bag, first and see if it works.

Good luck, please let us know.

Hopefully you've been seen by the doctors in the ER and I really hope you haven't got anything other than a chest infection that needs stronger meds to be totally cleared up etc. Please,do come back when you are able and tell us how you got on and how you are feeling. Best wishes!

Please get to A&E immediately. This happened me 5 days after a spell in hospital with COPD. I went to A&E and was re-admitted and quickly sorted out. The triage nurse admitted me immediately. Please go and good luck.

This happened to me many years ago. Each time I was discharged from hospital, within 24 hours I was admitted back in. I had just moved house and was told that something in the house was triggering my asthma ( I have ABPA too). The solution was (on the advice of the hospital) clean my bedroom thoroughly by removing old curtains, carpets. Wash walls with warm soapy water and ceiling and all surfaces. Hoover mattress and headboard. Then when I was allowed home but only into my bedroom that had been thoroughly cleaned. My family systematically cleaned each room and areas, it was a 4 bedroom house at the time and was a lot of work for them. We kept one carpet, lounge carpet and got it cleaned. This sounds so drastic but it worked. It was explained by hospital that dust and mould would have settled on walls naturally and my body (having lots of allergies) had to adjust to new mites, dust etc. It took time to sort it all out but it worked. It might be worth a try to clean walls and ceilings if you cannot replace carpets and curtains. Curtains can be washed though. Even if you have not just moved house, it seems there is something that your body cannot tolerate in your home. I wish you luck and good health, hope this helps.

Sounds like you need some stress control , the fight or flight instinct kicks in with a surge of adrenaline which is never good , i sometimes equate that feeling with cold water shock ,it strips you of breath, you're heart starts pounding and your body prioritises what it needs to do to survive and thats ok with a healthy body ,to us its a nightmare ,i hope you can get yourself some help and can stabilise your obvious distress

You have had a lot of good advice so I have nothing to add other than wish you the very best. I know how scary it is to feel your almost taking your last breath. Glad to know you went to hospital. 💐 look forward to hearing how you got on.

Hello

Have you made an appointment with your doctor. Every time I come out of hospital I always book a follow up appointment just in case the hospital has missed anything. You may or may not have the correct medication or need more of it because a hospital only gives you a weeks supply once you have returned home

Secondly if you get frightened just call 111 and speak to a Clinical Nurse who should be able to give you information on your condition. Every time I phone the number I am made an appointment to see an emergency doctor at a walk in centre

As for your condition I do know how your feel. I have had Bronchiectasis since 2015 and before that I had Asthma. I constantly cough because I struggle to bring up Perlman which frightens me because at times I feel like I am desperate to breath. Besides that I get the usual chest and back pain

Hi Caddi,

A while since i've been on here, been ill with a separate condition, but saw your message and wanted to reply...

I was in the same situation a few years back, I couldn't walk from one room to next without being bent double, desperately trying to draw my next breath and all the time feeling I was going to collapse at any time and that was the end for me. It's the most terrifying feeling in the world!

All I had was my inhalers as any other meds seemed to make me worse.

What I did was to start inhaling boiling water with salt two to three times a day, (or you could ask your gp for a saline nebuliser). I also I began to take a natural enzyme called Serrapeptase daily (Holland and Barrets or online). Research Serrapeptase online for yourself to get a feel for what it is, but try it - I'm certain it will help you.

In the meantime, keep on with your medication and don't try to tough it out! If you are really struggling get to A&E they will see anyone with breathing difficulties straight away!

Three years on I am still here, still struggle to breathe with any exertion, but it soon calms and I can walk and cycle and exercise. Try not to give in, take your time, get yourself better and you will be able to play with your girls again, promise.

Take Care

Joe

I had the same problem also. Turned out after 3 years of not being able to catch my breath, it was my heart. I ended up having a heart valve replacement 10 months ago and now I can breathe again, no oxygen. Check your heart!
