Hi, I've come across something this week which may help other oxygen users, maybe you l know this, but I didn't so just in case it helps someone else, I'm posting here.
Yellow soft paraffin BP can be used as a lip salve when using oxygen. It is fantastic, the closest I've come to a lip balm and very effective.
I've been given it in Southampton respiratory Centre, so it really is ok to use.
Other hospitals or respiratory nurse at GP, haven't mentioned it, so I've used the very ineffective gel they gave me up to now, so this is a great find.
This preparation is for external use on the skin only.
Avoid contact with the eyes.
Keep away from potential sources of fire, such as lit cigarettes or gas/electric fires when using this product. Paraffin is highly flammable and dressings, bandages, clothing, bed linen, towels or other fabrics that have been in contact with this product can be easily ignited by a naked flame or lit cigarette, particularly if large amounts of the moisturiser have been used, or the fabric or dressing have become soaked with the product. You should not smoke or use naked flames while this moisturiser is in contact with your clothes, dressing or bandages. You should regularly (preferably daily) change bedding and clothing that has become impregnated with the product. You should also be careful to make sure that the paraffin does not soak into chairs, seating or other furniture because of the potential fire hazard.

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.
Add oxygen to the mix could be quite dangerous.
I would seek further clarification from your oxygen provider before using.

I'm currently in the HD respiratory ward in Southampton, (testing with a bipap machine) and they've just confirmed what I said, but are going to do some research for me, as they need the answer too!!!!

i too was given yellow petroleum jelly for my mouth during a 16 day stay at southport hospital HDU. when i queried it they explained that i could use it on this unit as nursing is 1 to 2 ratio so i was observed at all times. when i went back to resp ward i couldn't use it.
I keep hearing this,and, in my opinion, someone panicked when they saw keep away from flames, and flammable equipment. Even material has warnings such as this, flammable, keep away from flames. I don't use oxygen at the moment, but may need to in the future. I have been on and off loads of different moisturisers as I had Severe Eczema. My skin is very very dry. We used to be plastered head to toe in the greasy horrible stuff, and the bed clothes would stick to us. Other moisturisers may have Lanolin in (sheep's wool fat) or other kinds of fat. In my opinion, it would be only a problem if you smoked (like my partners father did, lit a fag with his nasal oxygen on). He was in the kitchen and got away with a burnt upper lip and nose. Just don't sit next to any naked flames and don't smoke. This is why (can only talk about Cambridgeshire) they won't give home oxygen to people who still smoke. So, in conclusion, better to be safe than sorry, but don't worry too much if that is all you have got.
Hiya, I can't compete with Stone's or WheezyAnne's excellent and detailed replies but that sounds a bit iffy. Petroleum based products are not to be used with 02. I have been advised to use KY Jelly instead. I've bought some but haven't used it yet.
My lips don't bother me as much getting dry as my nose does. Mostly the right side for some reason. I bought a cream where my oxygen supplies are sold. It's called RoEzIt and it is petroleum free. It was $10.00 for a 1 oz tube, so pretty spendy but it has lasted over a year. I live in the US so I don't know if it's sold in Europe.
