Swollen Ankles

Hi all since my latest episode of bad chest, I’ve noticed that if I spend any time on my feet that my ankles swell up. Is this connected to my bad chest or is it something different ?

I have now finished steroids after 8 weeks of taking them, I am still using the nebuliser twice a day and I’m still on carbocisteine and Montelukast and usual inhalers, the Consultant wants to do a number of tests which I’m waiting for.

I would be grateful for your input so I know whether or not to bother my GP. Thank you

Are you on blood pressure medication, that can cause ankle swelling.

Hi 2greys I am on blood pressure meds but I’ve been on them for 15 years so I dont think it’s that. This is very recent and has only happened since I’ve been ill with my chest during the last 8 weeks. Thank you for your reply

Hi Silver252 . 😊

It's quite hard to say. Sometimes pulmonary hypertension can be one of the complications of having lung disease. Of course this is not necessarily the cause in your case. It's just one of the causes of swollen feet that I know of because of my own lung disease.

It's really best to bring this up with your doctor. Especially, if it continues and happens regularly.

Warm wishes,

Hi Caspina

Thank you for your reply, I’ve just had the letter to say that I have got my CT scan of the lungs next Friday, the Consultant wants to do some more tests but the scan is the main one. I had pneumonia and sepsis 15 months ago and pneumonia 2 years before that and this latest bout of borderline pneumonia has really wiped me out, I’ve been Asthmatic since the age of 2 I’ve also had blood clots on the lungs which caused scarring, but my chest has not been right for the last 15 months, also I get utterly exhausted just doing simple tasks, I’m sure the Consultant will get to the bottom of it. Thank you for your reply

Hello again 😊

I am very, very pleased there will be further investigation by your consultant. I can well understand how worrying this must be for you. You have been through an awful lot and must be so tired of it all now😐. Take it a day at a time. Take it slow and easy and please do keep us up to date as to how things go. *Gentle hugs* Thinking of you for next Friday. 😊🌷

As well as a symptom of heart/blood pressure worries, my gp told me that long term steroids can do the same thing. I also take BP tablets and suffer with swollen ankles having taken prednisone for the last 5/6 weeks 😊 Get well soon 😎

I'd go to GP, or perhaps the pharmacist would be worth a try.

Hi. I think if its bothering you then go to your gp or as suggested the pharmacist. It better to deal with things as they ocure rather than wishing later you had said something sooner

Following pneumamio I suffered swollen ankles for quite some time Thought they would never come down would at night, I went to wearing support knee high socks and these helped greatly. Would bring up to your GP as others have mentioned, does not harm.Although it might not be a specility he/she works within. I'm a diabetic and have a tendency to swell at my age. Treat yourself gentle do not over due- your history has been difficult.

8 weeks of steroids can cause fluid retention which may well show up in your ankles, if this is the case, it should gradually reduce to nothing after steroids have completely finished. After 8 weeks of steroids, you should not finish taking them abruptly, but on a reducing basis as per specified by your GP. Prednisolone causes the body to retain sodium (salt) and lose potassium, a combination which can result in fluid retention.
