How to approach my problem [NEW HERE]

Hi friends,

Just joined here, hope you can teach and help me.

So my story. For the past 3 years i've been having a lot of mucus which i don't know the source of, i don't feel any chest pain or a burn in my throat i just have a lot of mucus most of the time, the mucus is green mostly in the morning and in the rest of the day it's white.

I went to ENT Doctors and they all said i have an allergy, so i went to an Allergist.

The Allergist had me tested against environmental allergens and have the RAST test, for both no allergy was found. I also did a CT scan at the upper birthing system and no Sinusitis was found "Totally clean" according to the Radiologist.

At first the Allergist gave me antibiotics for 3 weeks, which didn't help and then he gave me 2 sprays "Avamys" and "Rhinolast", those 2 sparys did help decrease the mucus, but not entirely.

I don't really know what the source of my mucus issue is and so it seem the doctors have no idea too, can it still be allergy or is it Bronchitis, reflux? how can you tell where the mucus comes from?

I guess what my main question is how can i tell what is the source of my mucus problem?

The mucus is made in the lungs and they secrete 2 to 3 litres a day. Sorry I don’t know the answer to your question. Maybe it’s Bronchial

Hi. Keep on at the docs but in the meantime use anything they give you that helps at all. I sometimes use steam with vicks in, helps for me. I have copd and asthma, i dont think it sounds like those but im not a doc. Love burs xx

Hi and welcome.

Have you had your green mucus tested to see if or what bugs there may be in your lungs?

Not the clearish stuff so much but the discoloured first thing in the morning gunk.

Perhaps the antibiotics the allergist gave you were not the right ones.

Please go and ask for a sputum test if you haven't had one, or even another if you have had one previously.

You've come to the BLF site on health unlocked which mainly deals with lung and breathing issues. You don't mention having any lung breathing related tests, scans etc but to have come here you must be thinking it is lung related.

So speaking only as a person who has lived with a lung condition for a number of years and known many people who have had different lung conditions, the excess mucus may be caused by a lung condition, possibly, but not limited to bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis.

The only way to eliminate it being a lung condition is ask your doctor for a referral to a respiratory specialist, but first your GP will no doubt want you to do a spirometry test, which is pretty standard at the GP level before referral to specialist (in UK).

To rule out the lungs apart from a spirometry test, xray and ct scan of the chest area may be appropriate.

However, you don't mention any symptoms other than mucus production which may or may not indicate a lung issue and I suspect if you are not presenting any other symptoms that go along with that you may not get a referral to a respiratory / lung specialist. (UK)

So to find a cause (having had several areas already ruled out as the cause) you need to keep going back to your doctor.

If you are smoking maybe stop doing that and see if your symptoms improve, steam inhalation is a good idea as suggested by Burs above.

Hope your discomfort is soon resolved.
