Yup “it’s a rotten thing to have “is putting it lightly. I got it when I was barely 40 y/o. I’ve got a few other choice words to describe it. My parents now in their 80’s have had it, aunt got it a couple years ago and still hasn’t gotten rid of it. I recommend grinding oatmeal til it’s almost powder and put it in a bath and soak to get some relief. Use whatever the doc gave you and DONT ITCH IT! Wash hands more often than usual and try to distract yourself. I really am sorry it is a miserable virus. I am now vaccinated against it( jury’s still out whether it works or not) but been vaccinated for pneumonia and still got it and put in hospital. Lately I’ve been fortunate, exercise, plenty of water and lots of green smoothies seem to be paying off when it comes to my respiratory system. If only my ortho, bones, joints and muscle/skeletal issues were doing as well I’d be just like brand new—lol, I don’t wanna start over anyways this ride has been pretty fun and for sure very educational hahaha( like what else can we really say) do take care I hope it’s gone for you by weeks end, keep spirits up try to get comfortable and then STAY in that position

Had it two years ago. Managed with 6 paracetamol tablets a day for about 2 weeks. Can use antivirals if you catch it early enough.

Hi Brian,

I contracted shingles just before new years, I recognised the symptoms and had acyclovir anti viral early on.

I don't think it had any effect; although the rash has subsided & not as bad as earlier, the pain and itching continues. I'm in my 6th week so maybe the av wasn't early enough.

It can damage the nerves so even after the rash has gone the pain can trundle along for a couple more months (or longer in rare cases) - known as Post Herpetic Neuralgia.

Usually, the older you are the longer the recovery.

It's still giving me significant pain and disrupting sleep.

It can make you very tired and dull your appetite. I've lost 5kgs..

The pain may get bad enough that paracetamol or cocodomol won't dull it.

If so, see your Doc for alternative treatments.

Best wishes

Poor you. I'd heard that shingles was incredibly painful, but I had no idea the effects could be so long lasting. I hope it's not too much longer before you begin to feel better.
