The Telephone Box.

I loved these bright red boxes,

Which once were everywhere.

But now they've mostly disappeared,

And few folk seem to care.

The one I always liked the most,

Has long since gone to heaven.

It's where I made a special call,

On this day fifty seven.

It didn't take much time to make

But it brought me so much joy.

That I opened up the door and bawled

"I'm a dad and It's a boy!"

Ah such wonderful memories Don. I used to love the red phone boxes too but they ended up being vandalised.

I knew someone who had one in his garden. Xxxx😘

Such a poignant memory Don ,Lizzy x

Lovely memories Don. You may be pleased to know that the one in our village has been lovingly re painted and houses the village defibrillator

in reply to

That is an excellent use for them. Let’s hope the vandals keep their hands off them. 🙄

Love it. Telephone box graveyard. How sad... I know where the white van graveyard is, just on the outskirts of Worksop. Now that brought joy to my heart. K xx

Not so Kate, they sell for a couple of thousand each. Whoever owns those will be gradually doing them up and selling them

Great story! I thought those little red phone booths were just in the movies. Here in USA we use to have little glass ones and in the courthouse they had these really cool ones that looked like old confessionals in a Catholic Church all with the beautifully shinny wood those were neat. Do you remember the 5 cent Pepsi jingle? Oh I don’t know if you even had Pepsi products yet at that time like early 50’s probably. My father still remembers that one but then again it’s been a year since I quizzed him on it thanks for jogging my memory to try and wake up his. Thanks for the story/rhymn

As a lad I learnt a lot about the USA from the service men who came over here during WW2. I don't remember if Pepsi came with them but Cola certainly did. They were very generous to us kids when things were in very short supply. One of my wife's sisters married one and another moved over there later with her family. I have a lot of 'in-laws' in the USA, more than I have here in the UK. 😉

Don,we had a village taxi, village doctor and a red telephone box. The box was great as a landmark .Turn left at the church, carry on past the War Memorial and the telephone box is at the top of the road, sorted ! It was used for worried relatives, long distance courting , medical emergencies and as the only phone contact number for most people. it had it's own smell of copper pennies, roll ups and wintergreen in season. The glass panes steamed up in winter in a few seconds, any tiny cracked pane was a magnet for the wind to howl through and a dead give-away such as, "who were you phoning at 9.00 pm on Wednesday?" The whole world was at home, but everyone knew you were there. There is one in a front garden near me. Occupied by a shop mannequin with change of clothes to fit the seasons and, at Christmas, Santa himself. It would take a huge effort to steal it. Polly X

We have one in a village close to us and it now has a fibilator in it. I have also seen one on Cornwall used for books which you donate and exchange for other ones 🙂

Aw Don, that's definitely one to keep! I'd like to offer my most sincere - though belated - congratulations to you, and a very happy 62nd. to your little lad. x

in reply to

Sadly the little lad died 2013 from a stroke, but we still celebrate his life on his birthday, thank you. 🙂

in reply to

Oh Don! There are not enough words to say how sorry I am for your loss, and any pain I may have caused through my message, in ignorance?

I salute you on the celebration of his life that was lived. It is a fitting tribute. xx

in reply to

You didn't cause any pain Hoppy. I would find painful if no one ever mentioned him again.

in reply to

Bless you Don. He must have been quite a guy - just like his Dad! x

Just noticed a new telephone kiosk in town , its much larger and a dirty gray colour. Reminded me of DR Who and the Tardis.

Ours has become the village library/book swap. Still much loved even though it’s serving a very different purpose. I remember waiting for people to dial me back and counting up to 20 before picking up the receiver to see if it worked!

The phone box that I wrote about was outside a newsagents owned by two spinster ladies. They must have been able to hear the ring from inside the shop and treated it like their own phone (the number was printed on their invoices). In return they kept in spotlessly clean and put fresh flowers in there. Come to think about it, they might have had an extension from it in the shop because I never saw them in the box ever.
