Today Its been confirmed that Im on the border of stage 2 /3 .

This is all my own doing as I have found it very hard to stop smoking and still continue at 5 a day. Having buried my sister in November 2017 with the end stage of COPD. I should know better.

Hi Lyn, if you’ve cut down the cigarettes you’ve done really well. Nicotine is a very powerful, addictive substance so not easy to give up.

There is a quit support forum on HealthUnlocked so try joining that one too.

Good luck to you. Xxxxx

Hi it's up to you how you cope with this disease, personally I chose not to carry on smoking. Having burried your sister should be a wake up call, but only you can decide that one. I hope you make the right decision for you, but please think it over very carefully. You know it's your own fault but you will feel better if you give up and hopefully you can slow the progression down. Keep us up about how you are, take care😊 Bernadette xx

So sorry to hear your story .But.

Don’t be too hard on yourself LYNBURDON.You have made a start and that’s the most important thing.

Take baby steps and continue the way you are going.

Don’t beat yourself up. All that will do is to make you less able to deal with your condition.

Take great care of yourself. That’s all that counts.

With good wishes and do post again so others more knowledgeable than me can support you.

You're down to 5 cigarettes!! Go down to 3 now!!! I did this for my friend, he kept smoking 5 cigarettes a day, so I said now smoke 3....it's been 4 years in March since he smoked and he feels alot better. You could try that. Its a hard habit.

You can do this!!!

Hi Lynburdon, all of us on here know just how hard it is to stop smoking, I tried and failed so many times looking for that something that would stop me, until I realised it is within yourself, after reading The easy way to stop smoking by Alan Carr. Just dont give up on giving up. Irene x

I did the gradual reduction method to stop smoking. Once I was coping well with only smoking after 6 pm, I set the stop date, 1st August 1985. Haven't smoked since.

Good luck as you continue to work on it.

As you can see there's plenty of advice and no blame.

I hit lucky, my first grandchild was born 16 years ago and that was enough for me to give up the weed.

Nevertheless 7 years later I was diagnosed COPD.

Felt a bit hard done by but fortunately found this forum and haven't looked back.

Find something that you want more than a gag and you'll be most of the way there.

Good luck

Let's all know how you're getting on.

I of course meant a fag

A Freudian slip maybe K-Kilcoyne? 😉

Maybe 😂

I gave up when first diagnosed as I was told it would stop the progression I stopped for 3 and a half years went to see my nurse who im formed me I knew u wouldn't get better but didn't think u would get worse I was furious she then told me I'd done the damage so u think it's your fault NO ITS NOT no one deserves this disease and no one has a right to blame us if you had never smoked whose fault would it be then don't for one minute blame yourself for a disease no one had heard of untill we got it u handle it anyway u can stop feeling guilty about smoking blame the Walter reilly bringing the rubbish over here again for profit hmmmm

Hi, You should have learned by now that smoking only makes the lungs worse and they are so valuable give up the last bits to make it easier for your lungs and general well being.

Unfortunately once a smoker, any stress you experience a cigy is the first call, so I understand you still being on them due to the loss of your sister, but learn from the experience and get off the completely, you know it makes sense. You also have time on your side, there are treatments out there make the effort & find them, do the research use the BLF & nurses get yourself better than you could be.

..Sorry , first of all = who on earth cooked up this " stage " business ? , personally , I think its a LOAD OF UTTER NONSENSE - a friend was told he was at " Stage 2 " WITH COPD AND EMPHYSEMIA - oh yes ? = THAT WAS 16 YEARS AGO !!!, , and even he asked a few weeks ago , " When am i supposed to die then " ? ... with a smile on his face This " Stage " business is meaningless ,, all it achieves is, - it frightens folk, into believing , quite wrongly that " The end " is not far away = by whose authority ? = ITS HOW YOU FEEL THATS IMPORTANT , - another example . = a work colleague of mine was told " He was at the last stage with CANCER " ...- oh yes ? , = that was ELEVEN YEARS AGO !!!.....sorry , but there is a load of tripe about estimating , and thats all it is , as to when a person is going to die = NO ONE KNOWS FOR SURE- AND THATS A FACT ....ok , try and cut down on the ciggies , or better still, give them up , you'll feel a lot better ! and thats the important thing , AND THINK POSITIVE ! . Sorry to hear about your sister , but our bodies are all different , and react to the same disease in different ways ,, as they do to different drugs , and that must be taken into consideration , I'me sure she would agree ! , and by the way for more proof of " Estimating a persons's longevity , a neighbour of mine died of cancer..WITHIN THREE WEEKS OF IT BEING DIAGNOSED ,- unlike my friend with COPD AND EMPHYSEMIA ( stage 2 " = 16 years ago !!!) - and still going strong , and , you'll be pleased to know - " trots around the park most days ! . I TOO HAVE QUITE SEVERE COPD , AND THAT WAS DIAGNOSED 11 YEARS AGO ! ... SO BE POSITIVE , GIVE UP THOSE FEW CIGGIES , AND CONFOUND THOSE - SO CALLED " STAGE EXPERTS ", BECAUSE THATS WHERE THEY OUGHT TO BE ................................ON THE "STAGE = " AT THE " LONDON PALLADIUM THEATRE " ! = GOOD LUCK Lynburdon !!...

Wish i knew that then.my friend refused oxygen n doing better than me. U become dependent on O2. But i was alone n didnt have any information. G'Day Lyn, no judgement here. I think we're all in the same boat, well most of us. I definitely relate. Knew I needed to stop, but try as I did couldn't get a total handle until after I got really sick, ended up in ICU, Intensive care Unit put into a drug induced coma I haven't picked up or wanted a lung mucker since. As someone pointed out to me, it was my way of coping. Too much of that proverbial stuff that hits fans!! happened, way to much for anybody to bare.

So please don't beat yourself up, have faith you will get there. You are a survivor and have the knowledge of what you need to do.

Get yourself to a Pulmonary Rehab course, that could give further motivation and definitely will get more knowledge.

Others here have given you some great suggestions. Let us know how you go. All the very best to you and yours.

Oh wow hey I am so sorry you are struggling. I’m sorry you haven’t been able to quit smoking. Most all of us know how hard it was or is. Even if you did “ know better” we ALL knew better by the year 2000. Briefly: I had a stroke at 25 yrs, I’m now 53, 4 open heart surgeries, last one they discovered severe damage in lungs( I had already quit smoking) had I heard how bad my lungs were before I quit I may very well have continued to smoke. We are merely humans and some things have to just be classified under” shit happens”. You could quit smoking if you’ve gotten down to 5 a day, you can get down to 1 and then none. I did it by weaning off also , with a lot of cheating, Honestly there is a lot of coughing associated with the end final quit day so I’d make sure you’re strong and as healthy as you can get to get through the coughing phase. I’m in no way being an enabler of smoking but since you’re very sick I’m not going to scold you about it but you need support and that’s why all of us are here. But I do believe you might need help from doc and perhaps counseling on how to enjoy life without cigarettes! Ah yes it can be done says the lady who was sure she’d die with a Camel non filter between her lips( me) lipstick an all. Good luck you will be in my meditations
