Pseudomonas

I was told, when last in hospital that I had a pseudomonas aureginosa infection.

Since then I had two more exacerbations which responded to ciprofloxacin, but have felt wrecked.

Time scale l December2o17 til now.

Does it ever go away, does it lurk?

I have chronic asthma and bronchiectasis

It lurks Brika. Maybe it would be a good idea for your consultant to give you colomycin to nebulise on a permanent basis to keep the numbers down. I have nebulised ceftazidime for years which has been pretty successful. Most consultants don’t know that they can prescribe it though. The hospital supplies the drug and saline to make it up with.

Thanks, I'll talk with him when I see him in March.

If I get bad I can just turn up at hospital.

If you have a bad exacerbation you may need cipro or IV first to knock it on the head and then carry on with the nebulised antibiotic. Good luck.

Hi, thank you for that info on nebulised ceftazadime. I've just had 2 wks IV of that antibiotic, no one mentioned it was posible to nebulize with it. To be honest not feeling masses better & wondered if i needed additional treatment. Is it offered on the NHS, i do have a respiratory consultant, whom im seeing soon. I will mention it. Thank you.

I also nebulize Colistin but every second month...keeps it at bay, from light to moderate...am worried that I will build a tolerance...r u still using ceftazidime

Yes, Brika, the bacteria lurks...doctors call it colonized. I was diagnosed 1/17 with Bronchiectasis and pseudomonas. I had 4 exacerbations in ’17 and 2 in '18. I think that I did better in ’18, because I was better at clearing my lungs.

Initially, If I felt good, I didn't think that I needed to do the twice daily clearance routine. Bad me. In rehab, I was taught to huff 3 times, then bend forward and cough. This technique did not get all the mucus out of my lungs. I followed the advice of a fellow on this site and began using positional techniques. I now get down on the floor and lay on my left side, which seems to get the mucus moving. I then get up on my knees and elbows. The lungs being in a downward position helps with mucus flow. I huff and cough and get the crud out. Since using this technique, I haven't had an exascerbation for 8 months. Before, I'd had them every 3 months.

Sorry to be long winded, I just think that we have to beat the pseudomonas back, by keeping our lungs as clear as possible. Both you and I are new to this condition. I think it takes time to learn how to fight back. This site is so helpful in that regard. Take care!

Kpacific, inspired by your share on lung physio. I seem to have lost my way with that, so many other things to deal with. I'm 68 had bronch since teenager, had lung surgery at 17. Recently had 2 weeks IV ceftazidime as colonized with pseudo. I know i need to up my game on daily clearance. Any further tips gratefully received. Tried nebulising colistin but bronchial restrictions to severe. I take azithromycin 3x wkly, though affecting my hearing. Totally agree about importance of lung clearing routine.. need to get mine upgraded!

Hi Brika, I have bronchiectasis & am colonized with pseudo, just finished 2 weeks IV ceftazadime at home, it's a difficult one to shift.Clearing our lungs is key to helping avoid flair ups. Though struggling with this since I fractured a rib last autumn!

Hi everybody

Thanks for your comments.

I was recently in hospital for two and a half week with infective bronchiectasis exacerbation and pleurisy, don't ask!

Initially treated with ceftazadamine,as previous exacerbations showed pseudomonad, after six days of recovery,I got sick again and was put on tazocin as pseudo didn't grow!!!

I was shown how to next at home via a line.

My right lung partially collapsed .

Put on 3nebulisers beds to clear the junk from my lungs.

Seems to be working.

More after I see my consultant
