Although it is an antibiotic, it does have anti-inflammatory properties, too. May help get the junk out!

My husband also takes these antibiotics three times a week and find they help keep chest infections at bay.

Drink plenty and try and be as active as possible to help thin the mucus and get it up. If you feel you have an infection see your GP and try and get a sputum sample to him.

Hope things improve soon. Xxxx

Poor you.. you must go back..go through your GP asap and/or write to the Consultant at RBH.

This treatment is a preventative treatment not one to have if you have developed a full infection.

Then you will probably need a heavier dosage.

In November I had 12 days of Azithromycin 250mg daily. It had started with 6 days but I didn’t feel cured so had a second box.

Take carex

It sounds as if it is not working for whatever bacteria you have or the dose is not high enough. I took it for 5 years and then it stopped working. Do you have the name of the consultant at RBH? If so call their secretary and explain. Otherwise get your GP to do it. Unfortunately azithromycin has limited properties.

I have been taking Azith for about 3 years now. I swear by them keeping my chest clear. You should go back to your Consultant Hun. Good Luck. xxx

I've been taking them 3 days a week since November and they have made an improvement by clearing the mucus . I am not taking the Prednisone now but they cause me a really bad stomach the days after I take them. Wondered if you have had the same problem xx

Hi Joyce, I finished a course of Prednisolone 2 weeks ago, thinking back I did have a bad stomach, going to the loo constantly, I never thought it was Pred as I have had them before. I'll keep a record next time I have to have them.. Thanks Hun. xxxx

Sorry I meant the Azithromycin causing the problems , one of my senior moments. Told my daughters last week I had an appointment for a GCE , actually an ECG. At least I give them a laugh. xx🤔

Hi Again Joyce, No, I am totally fine with Azith., It is the Pred though that I think caused my Tummy upsets, Thank you for getting mixed up, it gave me the answer. Senior Moments happen to most of us . Take Care Hun XXX

Hi Joyce, I too had problems with my stomach and bowels during the first 6 weeks of taking Azith, but fortunately for me my body got used to them and I ceased to have any more problems, I have been taking Azith now for over 6 years and I feel very fortunate that they help to keep me well. If you continue to have problems I would go see the doc, maybe they can help. Are you taking probiotics, yoghurt etc to counter balance the good and bad bacteria in your stomach, if not try yoghurt. Good luck and take care. Maximonkey

Thank you for replying, I have a GP appointment on Thursday for results from ECG . The tablets are known to maybe have problems for people with irregular heart beat that I have. The nurse who did the test confirmed that but said the result seemed ok. I don't want to have to stop taking them.cannot tolerate yoghurt. In the past have taken Acidophilus tablets that helped .

Hi Joyce don't worry about irregular heart beat, I too have AF, Azith has never bothered me. I hope the doc can prescribe something for the side effects from Azith, they really are great tablets. Take care Maximonkey

I've never worried about irregular heartbeat and hope I can keep on the Azith. I now rarely produce any mucus and not had an infection since starting on them . Glad they've done you so much good 😋

Hi all been on Azithromycine 3 days a week for about 6 years. But alongside them I take a tablet called carbosystine 2 x 3 times a day they make the mucus more watery and easier to bring up the Azith I don’t think much of but the carbo I wouldn’t be without 😵

It sounds like your real problem is lung clearance, not the Azithromycin. If you want advice about this, please post back and explain what you are currently doing to empty your lungs of phlegm. These procedures are absolutely key to keeping infections at bay.

I'm trying to cough it up but I'm having a hard job of doing this.

This really isn’t enough. Here are some suggestions:

Physiotherapist: My experience is that the NHS doesn’t always address the need for lung clearance properly. It is much easier to dish out a prescription rather than spend time and effort teaching someone how to clear their lungs. See a physiotherapist who specialises in this and do not be fobbed off with a sheet of paper explaining how to do active cycle breathing. Sometimes this simply isn’t enough when you have thick sputum at the base of the lungs. Other techniques are postural drainage/autogenic drainage but the latter is hard to do properly.

Mucolytics: If your mucous is thick you need a mucolytic to thin and break it up. Carbocysteine 2 capsules three times a day may be useful. Nebulized saline can also help. Normal saline can be prescribed by the gp but you would need to buy your own nebulizer. Hypertonic saline can be very useful but a test dose should be given at the hospital.

Devices: eg Flutter valve, Acapella, Aerosure. Some of these can be prescribed so check with the gp, nurse or pharmacist. The last one is a PEP device that has to be bought by the patient.

Lastly, think about asking for follow up by a specialist consultant.

I have been taking these for about 18 months and I’ve only had one major chest infection in that time as opposed to one every couple of months.

My GP recommended a probiotics you can take while taking antibiotics. It's called Florestor. It really helped me.

Hi Missy Miles. I take this 3 days a week as well and it is very common here is Spain. I believe it is to help keep inflamation down. I cough a lot so I don't think is does much for that but still.
