Hi, I’ve been on the iron, for a while because my go said my iron lvl was low, but he said your not endemic, plus the fact of my taste buds no working. I have been unable to taste things for around 3 years but since I started on the iron tablets, my taste has now returned, and not having any effect to my COPD, but saying that I’m on alsorts of tablets for my other ills and no problem.

I am on Iron and vit D tablets as both are low I am now low on the iron scale but as soon as I come off them I will be deficient? It does seem a common thing with lung conditions.

Some of the medications effect how our bodies manage the nutrients, even if they are in supplements.

Magnesium levels in your body are essential.

Here are some links on iron and vitamin D.

You asked if other copd sufferers have iron deficiency. I was told be the GP that it is common in older people and those with chronic disease. OH has asthma/bronchectasis/immune deficiency, mitral valve disease and has taken Ferrous Fumarate tablets twice daily for almost two years. He will probably need to take it permanently. His iron level is still lower than it should be. He has a blood test every three months.

Guidelines state that the patient should be checked by the gastroenterologist to exclude internal bleeding.

Hi. Alan as been diagnosed with chronic anemia. He is now having tests to see if there is any internal bleeds. He is having treatment on the 14 day cancer pathway. Due for camera down throat and up bottom. See broncho specialist on Tuesday saw colon specialist last Friday. Was really frightened when I saw cancer pathway on the letter but they explained they have to move fast on internal bleeds. Hopefully everything turns out alright. Regards.

It is frightening but as you say, this is the protocol. I hope that everything is alright. OH went to gastroenterology department but opted not to have the tests as he was too poorly at the time - he was on IV Meropenem and had a line in his arm. Also, even if he did have a malignancy it is unlikely that he would have coped with treatment. However, I did send the FIT (bowel screening) tests and they came back OK.
