Hi just wondering is it normal to feel very weak after pnemonia my husband has been in hospital for two weeks cane out in Friday night he went in by ambulance he was in DKA and is a now newly diagnosed type 1 but he also has had pnemonia which he received antibiotics for whilst in hospital bear in mind he was fit and active before this and even the hospital was surprised he is type 1 but since being home on Friday night I’m just wondering is it normal to still feel very weak he’s eating and drinking ok anyone input would be appreciated thanks Jan x

Yes quiet normal it can take 6months to recover fully even if you are fit and well. Sorry i dont know what DKA or type 1 means. But it will take a while for your husband to get fully better. Plenty of rest is best.

Sorry Corriena DKA is Diabetic Ketoasidosis virtually nearly Diabetic Coma Diabetic either type 1 or type 2

it took me months to get my strength back ,I kept falling asleep alll the time , but obviously mention to doc to put your mind at rest ,like your husband I was fit I have a found out since I have a lung problem ,good luck

Don’t worry iam sure he will be fine pneumonia takes it toll had it last January still coughing months later it took at least 6 months for my lungs to be anything like they where . And I am sure the DKA will be sorted with the correct meds take care xxx

Hello Airg, As the others have said, pneumonia wipes you out and it can take months to feel normal. My grandaughter is type 1. Any infection affects her blood levels and also makes it difficult to manage the. I don’t know which of the management regimes your husband is on but I think that it would be a good idea for hime to contact his diabetic team and ask for help controlling it whilst infection is playing with the levels.

He has only just been diagnosed with Type 1 so he was in hospital with this and pnemonia blood sugar we are monitoring at the moment and he is on insulin twice daily hes been treated in hospital with antibiotics for the pnemonia and has only been home since friday night he eating drinking just very weak does not want to get up much

It will take about 6 months to fully recover from the pneumonia, with the DKA on top and newly diagnosed type 1 his body has been through a lot, and it sometimed takes a while to get the diabetes under control especially with an infection

I had viral pneumonia which took a full year to recover from. Even a pint of beer was off limits!! Rest and let things take their course. Trying to rush it is really not an option.

Absolutely it can. It can take months to fully recover from pneumonia. He really has to pace himself until he's back on form. Adose him to take at the very least a good tonic to rebuild his immune system. From now on he must take care not to catch colds, coughs, wash hands, use hand sanitiser, get annual flu jab and lifetime pneumonia vaccination because he'll be vulnerable to catching anything going. Really must protect his lungs.

It does take time to get over it. Best thing is rest. Stay warm drink plenty of fluids keep up to date with your antibiotics. Took me several months before I started to feel like my old self but any worries call the doctor in.

Yes it took me ages to recover from pneumonia and I'm sure that diabetes will affect the recovery even more- I agree that you need to get in touch with the diabetic team

I think you are expecting too much too soon. My daughter’s boyfriend is a 35 year old fitness fanatic. Does the gym and weights every day, did that ‘Tough Mudder’ challenge last year. He’s as big as a house and strong as an ox! Then a year ago he caught a bad cold whilst away in Europe, neglected himself, failed to get medical attention and by the time he got home he had really bad pneumonia. Needed hospital treatment. Extended antibiotics and much TLC. Took him over three months to be anywhere near back to normal. So if pneumonia can take down a super fit man mountain then us older mere mortals are going to take a jolly long time to be really back to our old selves. Just take good care of him and he will get there!

I was diagnosed with pneumonia few year back. After being released from hospital did feel weak for a few weeks after, like your husband I had a physical job.

So yes think it is normal

I had pneumonia back in April of last year. It took a long time to pick myself up from it. At least three to four months.

Thank you everyone it really helps to know this, i am not bothered how long it takes as long as he is ok he is my world i just wanted an idea if it was normal to be still weak but thanks you your messages help alot

I am sure it is normal to be so weak following such a shock to his system and now all fingers crossed he is on the mend. I think you are his world.

He has been seriously ill and it must have been a big shock for you. Now you must both take some time to rest and look after each other. There are some great people on this site who are always listening and looking out for each other. Don't be a stranger

I had pneumonia and came on this site to ask exactly the same question. 6 months after diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia and for the first time for the last 2 days I've been able to stay awake. I couldn't believe how much I was sleeping, I just need to start getting up and doing things now. But yes bacterial infections can cause diabetic comas, my mum has brittle diabetes and I've nearly lost her several times but mostly to medical negligence last year. The tiredness after pneumonia lasted a good 3 months, it was like having narcolepsy!
