I am currently in a stroke ward after suffering a suspected stroke last Thursday. My BP has been slightly raised since the initial collapse, where it was 180/117 when the ambulance arrived. Mind you this was over an hour after the first calls so it might have been higher. My Oxygen has averaged around 92 while in here. I have stage 3 COPD, Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema.
I just wondered if anyone knows wether a drop in oxygen or a high BP as mine was could bring on a TIA/Mini stroke? Thanks 😊

It is certainly possible, if you already had a preexisting weak blood vessel in your brain.
I once had a very similar pressure (180/120) coupled with being extremely short of breath, o2 at 87%, then blue lighted to hospital. The result of a teenager sitting on the bus right behind me who absolutely reeked of perfume, the air around her must have shimmered with the fumes it was that bad. After about 4 hours in primary care with an x-ray looking for blood clots on my lungs and my o2 back up to 95% I was released, none the worse for my experience other than my wallet was £20 lighter because I had to get a taxi home, with it being 1am. I was lucky and got away with it that time. I am now a lot more cautious and always buy a "day ticket" so if someone gets on who has "splashed it on all over" I get off the bus and wait a few mins for the next one.
Unless your Oxygen was dramatically low.i.e almost to the point of losing conscious i imagine that you TIA was more related to your elevated blood pressure Brian but only your consultant neurologist would be able to explain the reasons for the event,best wishes for a thorough recovery though.
Thank you 2greys and Skiskool. I don’t know what the oxygen level was when the ambulance came, nobody asked, think we were all in shock and it was as if I was paralytic! I couldn’t speak straight, my head was spinning like a top among other things. Very scary experience. I’m thinking it was more than likely a mini stroke/TIA as the main symptoms have now eased but I still feel exhausted all the time and a bit shaky with a headache. Hopefully they will figure out what happened, but it would be nice to know wether the cause was something to do with my COPD as that would help me avoid it in the future.
Much more likely to be your blood pressure, but no doubt they will be working on that. I do hope you feel better soon, it’s a very nasty experience, as I know only too well. All the best xxx
One of my neighbours has just suffered the same thing, he doesnt have any lung complaints and is generally very fit, still teaches some type of marshal arts and is 74. Im not sure you can avoid these mini strokes, but am sure the hospital will advise you. Hope you make a swift recovery x
I was in your position 2 years ago and my BP had been 235/115 at one point in the morning when exercising. I have since been put on more BP medication and maintain 135/78 average. Added to Riveroxaban anticoagulant. I am stage 4 COPD Emphysema. One down side is possibility of nose bleeds and my last one took me to hospital for 3 days as it took that long to stop the bleeding. Its all balancing act and careful planning and awareness of our vulnerability.
Sorry to hear that you went through that, but that’s really interesting to read. I’ve been thinking that the Ramapril, which I’ve now taken for about eight years, are possibly no longer doing the job. Maybe that caused the huge spike in BP. 235/115? God knows how that felt, I was a quivering mess at 183/117! Keep well 😊
I too have been on Ramipril for some years. GP has since added Doxazosin 2 mg and Lercanidipine 20 mg. Lercanidipne in the morning an hour before food, Ramipril at lunch time and Doxazosin before bed time. Seems to working for now. Hope you recover soon and get out and about again without delay. Hi Brian, I just found your recent post. Awful experience and I tend to agree that the blood pressure would probably have been the culprit rather than the O2 levels. Do hope you're feeling bit better now and that you have some explanation for what happened.
Hello and thank you. I’ve been for an appointment with my GP today to try and organise more tests and investigation. He was puzzled. He said I’d experienced all the symptoms of a stroke but it was not evident on the MRI scan. He said he was really puzzled by it, and then started to speak about the swelling in my lower neck. He examined it and sent me straight to the local hospital for a few X-rays, saying that he was a bit worried by it. I didn’t ask him to explain, I’ve kind of grown a bit tired of my health issues and would just like it all to settle down, or at least get me some proper answers! I’ve been for the X-ray, and now it’s time to wait. Again. Fingers crossed I find out what’s happening to me soon!
I’m keeping everything crossed for you 🤞 I really hope something shows up the answers soon to explain what’s happening. Hopefully you don’t have to wait too long for the results of the X-rays.
After NOT having a stroke Brian i am sure that this will be a walk in the park in comparison and that it is something of small significance or even nothing at all.
