Lansoprazole and doxycycline

Can anyone tell me if Lansoprazole counts as an indigestion medicine as my Doxy tells me not to take within two hours of indigestion meds.

I will phone the pharmacy if no one knows the answer, but just thought of it right now and the pharmacy is closed until Monday. No urgency but I'll probably forget all about it and then when I'm due to start Doxy in November (through till April) I still won't know the answer.

Yes, I AM a dozy old wotzit, but you tolerance and help would be appreciated! Lol! xx Moy

Thank you. I have taken them much closer together in the past as didn't realise. Oops! It's clearly written on the outside of the packaging this time. xxMoy

You’re not dozy MoyB and yes lansoprazole cuts down the acid in the stomach. I take it for my hiatus hernia and no longer get heartburn.

Pete takes omaprazole and if he’s ever on doxy, he takes them a few hours apart.

Take care xxxxx

Thanks for saying I'm not dozy - but I think I have been! See my reply to Dorothy (above). I take so many meds it's sometimes hard to remember what you can take with what! Anyway, I will adjust my med time accordingly.

I KNEW I'd get sensible answers on here! Lol! xx Moy

Glad to help and don’t worry. Pete takes lots of drugs too and he and I get confused at times. I sit and read the leaflets. Xxxx 💋😘💖

It is so easy to get confused when you have a lot of meds to take! I am seriously thinking of getting all my meds delivered in marked packaging to ensure I am taking the right ones at the right time.

Yes, I'm on Doxy now and I take my Ranitidine morning and evening and take the Doxy after lunch that way they're all spaced apart. I assume it is one dose a day you'll be on, if so that should work well.

Oh also, leave 2 hours either side of taking it for dairy too, I mean a cup of tea is fine but not heavy dairy cream, ice cream etc.

MoyB in reply to Shancock

Thank you. I didn't know that about the cream either. Seems like I haven't read the info properly! xx Moy

I don't know if it says about dairy on the leaflet anyway it's just I did some research when I got mine, I always do with abs as I can get problems with them.

Hi MoyB, I take lanzaprozol, and they are a antisickness tablet, they are also good for heartburn and acid, I take one every morning before any medication because some of my medication makes me nauseous and causes me to have acid, hope this helps X X 😊

Hi Moy interested about you saying you take Doxy over winter. My Consultant has put me on it 3 x a week (as I've got Haemophilis since last year on & off ) hope it keeps bugs to a minimum

My consultant is trying me on the Doxy over winter to try and cut down the number of infections I get over that time. I'm hoping it will work! xx Moy

The BNF guidance on this (bnf.nice.org.uk/interaction... shows no interaction between the two; I'm surprised your pharmacy couldn't look that up themselves. The issue with most antacids is the calcium they contain, and that reacts with a lot of medication; Lanzoprazole is a proton inhibitor and doesn't operate the same way, or contain calcium. However, I always think it's a good idea to space out medication, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks - I haven't checked with the pharmacy yet. I have taken the two meds together before and all seemed fine, but it was actually written on the label this time which made me sit up and take notice! Thanks xx Moy

My understanding is that lansoprazole and omeprazole are not indigestion remedies for the purposes of that guidance. As per another reply it’s the calcium in otc preparations like gaviscon that reduces effectiveness. The mechanism of proton pump inhibitors mean that you can take them at the same time as the doxy (or other meds with similar instructions, like cipro) with no problem at all - that was the answer I was given when I queried this a few years back with a pharmacist, anyway.

Oh, thanks for that. It would explain why I was ok taking them together before. The thing is I will be on them for several months this time so want to get it right. xx Moy

If you can't make your mind up between the conflicting advise from the helpful people on here, you can ring any Pharmacy if yours is closed. Our Asda Pharmacy is open even on Sunday.

Failing that, you can ask on the NHS helpline tel: 111,.

I didn't think of ringing another pharmacy! Good idea. We've got several open today. I DID say I'm a dozy wotzit! xx Moy

Ive been on doxy for months on and off and take Omeprazole and space mine out in case of any conflicts. Interesting Charlie G as always thought omeprazole was indigestion also even tho its given for hyetus hernia. Will look into also.

Yes, my Lansoprazole is given for a hiatus hernia and gastric reflux which caused oesophagitis leading to heartburn and pain, which I guess would be 'indigestion'. xx Moy

in reply to Pwkav1

I think ‘indigestion remedy’ is what’s causing confusion here. As I and someone else said, the issue with otc ‘indigestion remedies’ and antibiotics is usually calcium, and in some cases magnesium or zinc depending on the antibiotic in question, interfering with the antibiotic’s action and effectiveness. The calcium temporarily neutralises the acid, thus reducing symptoms, which is why drinking milk can also offer relief, albeit usually quite fleeting. My understanding is that PPIs work completely differently to this, they actually prevent the production of acid at source, rather than neutralising what’s already there using minerals. That’s why PPIs are used as a long-term preventative where gaviscon etc aren’t: you only take them as a remedy when you already have symptoms.

To throw a real spanner in the works, whilst taking her omeprazole was fine, for a long time our local team insisted that where littleun was taking meds with this guidance, she had to completely avoid dairy for two hours either side of dosing ...tertiary centre says not to worry about it, because the effect is negligible. 🤷‍♂️

That's interesting. I've only heard about the 'dairy thing' today. I will investigate further! Thanks xx Moy

Yes it is a remedy for heartburn indigestion etc

It's all a bit confusing. I think I'll have to ring the pharmacist and get his take on it. Thanks for your reply. xx Moy

Hi, I think it's all been said above. You're not dozy, it's a flipping minefield.

I'll just add that it's always wise to read everything on the leaflets of every drug we're prescribed, and keep one for future reference. I have a little library of them & try to renew them every year as sometimes they change.

There's so much to remember, for instance if you're on statins you cannot partake of soya products, grapefruit inhibits the effect of some drugs (sorry I cannot remember which drug so who's dozy now! and administering drugs used to be part of my job). There are other no no combinations hence the reading of the leaflets which show all the contraindications.

Best, P

Yes, it's a minefield alright! Since reading replies on here I'm also wondering if I can take my AdCal at my normal time too as that's calcium based and people have said not to take Doxy with indigestion meds because of the calcium. At this rate I'll be popping pills all day long at various intervals. Lol! Thanks for your reply. xx Moy
