I've had a hiatus hernia for many years and as a result of this suffer with GERD . The acid reflux I suffer with has caused scarring in my throat and this may be what has been picked up on in your own case.

I've just had a camera down into my lungs called a bronchoscopy. I had sedation which you should be offered. It's nothing to worry about. I didn't find it uncomfortable. The only "not nice" thing is the gel that's put up your nose to numb the nose and throat. It's very similar to the antihistamines you spray up your nose. Try not to worry, easily said than done I know. But see it as a step forward towards a diagnosis and treatment. Got my fingers crossed for you xxxx

It can be scaring I started losing my voice a couple of years ago and I have gerd it can cause loads of problems with your throat and lungs.. Don't worry about the results of this test I went through a cancer scare it took over a year by the time they said I didn't have it... Take care ...

HI Bkin, Yes not bothered about a hiatus hernia like you say but the "something found in your throat and it could be cancer" is a different ball game. I have had two previous cancer scares. I had loads of biopsies followed by a lumpectomy which revealed no cancer!!!!! The other was a 'lump on my spine' which they thought could be cancer!!!! It was scoliosis! So hope this too is another scare. I have had a tube and camera up my nose and down my throat before and didnt find it too bad. Thank you for your thoughts. Ela

Hi Ela66, that's really odd, usually they don't say anything until results are back.

I have hiatus hernia (sliding) for me its no biggy accept I can only wear elasticated waist on trousers.

I have had a barium meal to investigate cancer but none was found.

I have had camera investigation of throat and airways whilst sitting upright, not sedated, may or may not be the same as you will have. Tube inserted and you are instructed to swallow it keeps going down until they tell you to stop, the camera is on the end of tube.

For me again nothing found, throat just a bit sore for a couple of days afterward where the tube was pulled out.

The tests are done to rule out cancer, so hopefully cancer will be ruled out for you too.

Keep fingers crossed you will have good results.

Best wishes Bkin

Hi having had two previous cancer scares I was resigned to this time....... one previous ended up with an operation etc. but the Consultant carried out the test and thinks its inflammation due to acid reflux and the hiatus hernia. He has put me on meds testing blood and sending me for a scan. Ela

As you have a hiatus hernia it is possible that you have something called Barretts Esophagus.webmd.com/heartburn-gerd/gu...

Barretts is a restructuring of the tissue that lines the throat, only in 1-2000 cases does it progress to cancer,i have it and i have to have an endoscopy once every year to ensure that the cell structure remains constant,it is thought to have been caused by silent reflux possibly as a result of the hiatus hernia, its is not painful and similarly to the reflux goes unnoticed.

Try not to worry, cancer of the throat is quite rare and it is probably something similar to mine and easy to treat.

Hi skis do you sometimes get a constricting of the throat when you swallow food or drink? Just wondering as this is something I occasionally experience.

Yes,i tend to take fluids when i eat,i have no problem with fluids,i asked my gastro consultant if this was a common side effect and he said no it wasn't?so bit of a mystery,i have requested assistance from the speech and language team who as you probably know deal with swallowing problems and they can't think of a reason, further investigation with a barium swallow could be useful to observe the throats action whilst swallowing but i would need another lifetime to organise that though my local trust lol.

Thanks skis for input. I had this prior to first investigation where nothing was found, I wonder if its stress related, could be I guess, I notice when I have hot drink and food on occasion, I've not noticed with cool drink will have to become more aware of when its happening. Best wishes Bkin

No it's definitely not stress related with me.some foods i used to enjoy without problem now have to be blended to a smoother consistency but we manage ok and my Belgium beer is ultra smooth and washes down most things.

Best wishes and keep noshing.Ski's xx

Thank you for replying to my problem with my throat. I still havent heard when I am going to have the camera to identify the problem. My throat feels very "thick" in the morning. Then during the day I get intermittent burning. I just need to know what I am dealing with as I am under alot of stress at the moment widowed 4 months ago and having put my house on the market and sold to first time buyers in early June I am still here!!!! First time alone and probably moving hundreds of miles away leaving my friends to live near my son. I dont know where you live but I had a barium swallow organised very quickly. I hate mysteries and need to know what I am dealing with as I am sure you do. All the best. Ela.

Ela you have had a lot going on in your life,i too am a widower and issues like these only add to our already fragile nature, however rest assured that like my Barrett's diagnosis it is more than likely a minor issue.having had a barium swallow already i imagine this will most likely be related to reflux issues and although irritating and uncomfortable you may end up being on a course of what they call PPI.s such as omeprazole to dampen down the acids in your stomach to give you some relief.

Best wishes Ski's and Scruffy.

Quote Ela66 " Then during the day I get intermittent burning. I just need to know what I am dealing with "

that sounds like acid reflux to me but we are not doctors so cannot advise you for sure what you are dealing with but your test results and doctors will be able to advise you more accurately.

For sure illness can be brought on by stress, I wonder if you are asking too much of yourself at this time. Put off moving to live near your son and stay close with your friends who will no doubt be supporting you at this time, just till you have this health issue sorted. I think just staying put and dealing with one thing at a time is going to reduce the amount of stress you are feeling. Later you can think again if actually you do still want to move to live near your son or continue living in familiar surrounding with people you know.

Take good care, Bkin

Hi thank you for your sound advice. I had put the house on the market before Gerald died as our son wanted to help out with his illness. As it was sold before Gerald died I decided to carry on with the move as this house is far too big for me and outgoings are high. I thought exactly the same as you regarding the outcome of the tests and if I needed treatment. I would feel totally isolated if I didnt feel well due to any treatment I may have needed. I had decided if that was the case I would stay put. 2 days after the barium swallow I had a letter to go for the scan!! I will keep you informed but appreciate your concern. You take care. Ela x
