Hi I don't think it's medically used much any more due I think to how long many in the so called end stage live for. This is due to advances in treatment. I think this should be comforting for anyone deemed to be in that stage.

It's more common now to use stage 4 instead. x

There only being four stages then the end stage is four, if there was ten stages then the end stage is ten.

NOT THE END OF LIFE STAGE, shoot, I am at nearly stage four, what used to be called end stage, and I am still working full time. Do you think that if I was at the end of my life I would still be working? I know I'm crazy, but not that crazy :)

Hi Duff,i am classed as End stage copd or stage 4 if you would like to call it that or very severe as other consultants care to use.i just call it life with a slight shortage of oxygen and sitting here with a glass of wine and not even slightly out of breath watching a cat that still has eight lives left i don't plan to shuffle off anywhere anytime soon.just think of it as a number and numbers stretch to infinity and beyond.

Best wishes Ski's(no4) and a cat(no8).xx

Hi Duff1953 .

It used to bother me too. It doesn't now because I realized it's just a label. And none of us are labels. xx 🍁

Hi Duff1953 it’s for this very reason that I ignore all numbers and stages, never ever ask for them! I just keep going the best I can. Good luck. Joy.

ME too. I never ask for numbers or stages . I feel that if I brand myself with a stage then I will become that stage in my every action and thought. As it. Is I'm still my old energetic fit self ..........with no number or stage . 😉

Greetings

I'm with skis -- and I'm not out of breath either. I will be soon... "End stage" is when there's no further treatment available. We've got our oxygen, inhalers, antibiotics, steroids and cough medicine all lined up but we aren't going to get lung transplants or valves (except for me, I've just had two implanted, so that's that). We just do what we've done for a long time -- get on with life.

It's nothing to be scared of... trust me. I'm a doctor.

Try not to let that stupid phrase (that they actually shouldn't even use anymore) scare you. I agree with catnip, I think it simply means there are no further treatment options available to your doctor that he or she can offer to you.

Same here as Skis & Cas, Stage 4, just received my confirmation letter to my GP, it is Typed "Severe COPD Stage 4". I'm meeting up with Skis for a good ole Port & Cheese shindig in some Country Pub, with Scruffita and my Princess, we will also meet Cas & Chom, Of Course Don has to bring his child so he can Write as he sees us all...A Crowd of drunken fools with Animals at a Stage 4 Celebration of Life......... Cheers, Salud, Skol Hic. xxxx

It is just a word to indicate a measurement level. They had the same problem describing Kidney Failure. When I first worked with kidneys people whose kidneys had finished working had "Terminal" Renal Failure! Obviously nobody likes this so it was changed to End Stage Renal Failure which again was not liked. My point is what do you call a functioning level without it having bad connotations. What I think is needed is a fuller explanation of the stages and their implications.
