Hi guys,

Hope your all well; back here for some support again as it really is a super group!!

as you all know I’m 32 with emphysema and asthma; i have given up smoking for 4 months and also started walking a little.

Feeling a little poorly this week; my chest is tight; hasn’t gone away at all today also my cough that I thought had gone has come back first in the night now showing in the day too!!

Trying to say positive but finding it really hard to do currently! A little down in the dumps!

So with that in mind; how’d you all try to stay positive?

Thanks in advance

Hopefully lung and felling down will pass soon..I find one can feed off the other is was about to give in (not literally ) because of huge amount of steroids I've been placed on but it passed mostly because of the support I got on here..so hang on in there Nell until things improve we're all rooting for you 😊

Likewise Hidden - we need our rescue meds when we're I'll but its still a struggle and trying to stay positive is so important. Doing exercise is fantastic and it will speed your recovery. Stick at it,you're doing great!

Hi xNellx

I didn't previously know your age but hopefully as you are so young you have been tested for alpha1 antitrypsin deficiency, forgive me if you've already discussed this, I tend not to read every post here and in fact not here every day, nor reply to posts every day.

All that aside I would get in touch with your GP regarding your tight chest and cough and if you have a sputum pot take a sample of anything you cough up that is discoloured for your doc surgery to send away for testing. Its important to keep on top of any lung infections and never delay getting further treatment for it, regarless if its a new infection or a returning one.

To stay positive, distraction works well :) anything you feel up to doing that you enjoy. Out for short walks, even when poorly 3 x 5 min walks per day = 15 mins and it will help the lungs cough up the gunk they may need to as well as helping overall.

You tube is a great resource for distraction of anything that takes your fancy.

Make sure you eat properly and drink plenty of water, its important to help the body heal.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Best wishes Bkin

Hi Bkin, that’s ok and yes I have tested for alpha1 but don’t yet know the results waiting for them and a pulmonary rehab course.

And if it gets any worse I’ll go and see my doctor.

I’ll try a distraction 😊

Thank you 💜

Thanks guys! i hope it will pass too! I was really bad last winter didn’t sleep much because of my cough, was sick a lot from it; pulled all my back out; struggled with my full time job; then was put in Hosptail, found the emphysema and asthma after tests. Just scared this winters going to be the same! Need to get my head in right place again! 💗

Hello xNellx , 🍁

I am sorry you are having a bad patch. 😑

Oh those awful "down in the dumps" days. I think all of us here get those and boy are they hard to climb out of at times. There are days when I am totally and utterly bereft of any will or energy to do a thing. So, I lay low and let it pass. And then, when a better patch comes along , I make the most of it and emotionally, I feel better and that helps me physically too. I often make little plans of things I'd like to do when my next "bouncy day" comes along. Most recently, I reorganized my earring collection and de-cluttered my space. My next project is creating a small Christmas village 🎄. These are really small things that I can manage yet, give me a sense of purpose and make me happy. 😊

I suppose what I'm rambling about is that working towards making plans to do something fun for yourself or planning to go somewhere you like, gives us something to hold on to, look forward to and gives us purpose. No deadlines. No stress. 😊

I hope you feel better today.

Warm wishes,

Cas xx 🙋🐕

Oh Caspiana if only you could put some of your wisdom and positively in a bottle, then we could all keep some in the cupboard for those "down" times. Hope you and handsome Chom are doing ok? I must check to see if I've missed any photos in your posts. I've a fair bit of catching up to do!! Best wishes and any news from the hospital re the transplant list?

Hi SquirrelsHolt . 😊😁

So lovely to hear from you. I haven't put up any pictures of Chom recently, but I will soon. 👍🐕 He's now all grown and such a character. He is such a calm dog. He has never been much of a barker, but when he does give an odd bark here and there, it's deep and booming. He loves people.

My last visit with my surgeon in Tokyo was in July. He has asked me to see him again in November. I used to see him every six months. Now he wants to see me sooner. He said "we're getting closer" so, may be that means my time isn't too far away. However, I am not holding my breath 😃😄 or waiting for the transplant to enjoy life. I am doing that the best I can now.

I hope you feel better very soon. You are missed.💓 Love and hugs to you.

Thank you Cas that was such a lovely reply. I do hope you get some good news in November, but either way, with Chom by your side, you have never been one to dwell on things for too long. You come across as such a formidable woman,I'm certain things will work out well for you.

Hi xNellx, being positive is an attitude of mind, try to look at the good things that you have in your life and be thankful. I have said in previous posts that I stopped smoking with the book "Alan Carrs easy way to stop smoking" and I think that made me see that once I had stopped I was free of the addiction, i felt so good I was almost euphoric and this stayed with me for a long time, so I was very lucky. Everybody has good days and bad, try to find a hobby that you enjoy, or get a bike, nothing better than riding for feeling free and is great exercise. A steam room is great for clearing your chest but are few and far between nowadays.Keep strong , its only been 4 months since you stopped smoking and all that gunk has got to come out, see your doctor if things dont clear. Just remember how well you are doing, and be proud. Irene x

Hi there, the cough is a sign your lungs are clearing out the gunk from smoking , actually it is a good sign . It is bad at the beginning but in time you will look back and see the benefits. But don't worry if you have to make a few tries at giving up or ask the doctor for help with withdrawal symptoms. You are doing well and time will soon pass, treat yourself with the money you did not spend on ciggies it works wonders.

Hi - hope you find the rehab as useful as I did. I really did not want to go as I suffer badly from anxiety, but that is another story. I managed the first session and after that could not wait for subsequent ones. Not only were the exercises good for me, but, but the camaraderie did me the world of good.

Hello simbanine, yes I’m not looking forward to the rehab at all! But I’m going to go to the first one; see how I get on; scared I’ll not be able to do it. But will see 💜
