Hi everyone could anybody help me out is it possible for me to go back to work stage 4 copd have been at home since mid March I’m afraid that if I don’t get back soon I will end up having a breakdown if only I could regulate my breathing so that I don’t start gasping after a short walk

Hi, one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions. I would say it is possible as long as it is no too physical. A lot does depend on your own determination and an understanding employer.

Thank you nice to hear positive very understanding employer sitting down all day plant operator construction still have company vehicle and fuel card despite not having worked for 6 months

I work full time as a production engineer (self employed). Borderline stage four (FEV1 31%) and 68 years.

I know exactly where your coming from re. The breakdown, I would go stir crazy too. To be able to go back to work, you need to be pretty fit (for your condition) and have mastered pursed lip breathing for extended periods. You will need loads of energy too. Very hard work indeed. If I can do it maybe you can too.

It may do you a lot of good both physical and phgchologically. Worth a try? I went back to work 2 days per week after my diagnosis mainly for the extra exercise and something to put my mind to other than the COPD.Do let us know how you get on and good luck.

Hi I don't know how many hours you work but how about part time? Maybe you could manage that. The only way to find out is to go back and see if you are ok. x

Not to bad sealed air conditioning cab with eco filters to catch any dust particles that might try to get to the cab spoke to my employer and we both agree that I should stay of work until next March so that I can increase my weight and to help my breathing improve as i was self employed that is not very helpful will decide what to do in two weeks hope I make right decision

By all means. Choose a job that suits you. Go part time if you wish. Get an understanding employer be honest with them explain your problem you may have to keep searching and not be disheartened as you go through the process. Never give up and do your best.

I know summer's gone Duff1953 so don't think I'm batty for suggesting you buy a little hand held fan. Before I went on oxygen it was a real lifesaver for me if I became very breathless. It is endorsed by physios and respiritory nurses. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Sheila x

Hi the only person to give correct advice would be your specialist or at least your GP.

They can at least carry out tests and give you the OK to go back to work or not.

Employers are legally required to make workplace adjustments to take account of individuals' health and other requirements, though there are obviously practical limitations on what can reasonably be done. Research shows that, after 7 weeks off work, it becomes increasingly difficult to get back into the swing of it. I found that out when I was on long term sick leave, and had difficulty readjusting, but did manage some work activity with adjustments from my employer. Eventually, the condition forced me to take early retirement, but I had had so much time off work by then that I didn't have a problem with retirement (I'd made other arrangements in my life, busying myself with other things).

Whatever you decide, it will be right thing for you because it will be your decision.
