The internet and it's many articles of hope

Hello everyone!

So I sit here and read articles dating back years on how this enzyme, or tis protein, or this molecule can help cure a potential condition. Yet where are the clinical trials or follow up programs for them? Do any of you have family or friends in the medicine field that can answer that question? Is it because it worked in the mouse model but does not translate to a larger animal etc?

There are a number of good reasons why research does not proceed. Mainly concerning safety. Mice/rats etc can give pointers towards treatments but follow up research using human tissue may indicate that what is fine in mice may be toxic to human cells. Therefore no ethics committee would grant permission for human trials. It is often the case that futher research is demanded to replicate the results from the first trials. Very often due to the size of the research group there is too small a field of subjects to validate the results. If you read the newspaper stories they always use the words could, may, suggest a treatment etc. The reality is that even successful research which leads to new drugs or treatments can take 20 years to go through the process.

20 years yes and that's great news... 20 years from now :). But yes I read more on how it's all process through and how the FDA has to make a decision on whether it's going to actually help or harm the patient. Much more to it then we know.

hi a little late. you are right there have been various magic cures shown but it doesn't seem to filter down the chain to the user. We all know that human tests take very long times to filter thro' some are rejected way before they get to the market place and the long tern effects need to be known together with side effects. Lots of testing from early concept.
